This was a beautiful little square in the altstadt. It was especially nice during the Christmas market. While the square itself wont' take a lot of time to explore, the area is filled with shops and restaurants.

This was the first of four markets we visited on a recent coach tour, and certainly one of our favourites. Bernkastel is a traditional German town, totally suited to the festive season. In fact, one of the house exteriors was decorated as an advent calendar, and we are guessing that behind each window was a special treat- just a shame that we visited before December 1st so we never found out!! The market is spread over several areas connected by winding, narrow streets with lots of lovely little shops. There are various cafes, bars and restaurants to spend time in, just soaking up the atmosphere. The town is separated into two halves by a large river over which an ornate bridge is built- along the market side there is a tourist information centre, and many spectacular old buildings that provided great photo opportunities. A terrific trip, and we were sad to leave- go if you can !!

The Markplatz in Bernkastel-Kues is usually our first stop once we land in Frankfurt, as it is only about a 90 minute drive from the airport and it's a great place to do some shopping for shoes (Berkenstocks), Mosel wines, and other local favorites. It can be a bit overrun with tourists at times, but for the most part they are Germans (it appears to be a popular senior citizen bus trip destination). There are plenty of small cafes and restaurants for both indoor or outdoor dining, and the atmosphere is great. We like to use this as a jumping off point for a few nights in the Mosel and/or Rhine valleys. There is a large car park along the river at the bridge that connects Bernkastel to Kues, but if that is full drive across the bridge and you can park in the huge parking garage of the local supermarket (go around the circle and up a block on Bahnhofstraus, the garage is on the right), and it is only a 5-7 minute walk back to the Markplatz. You will pay 2 to 4 Euros to park at either place, depending on how long you stay.

One of the Mosel’s gems! No matter how many times we’ve visited here we still enjoy coming back. We brought a friend from the US for a walk through. He too loved this beautiful village. Lots of shops (mostly touristy, but still), restaurants, cafes, and hotels to stroll around/through. For a look at a wonderful, touristy but beautiful, ½ timbered village, it’s hard to beat Bernkastel.

This little square in the main village on the bank of the Mosel river is straight out of a Fairytale from days gone by, the architecture is incredible, the shops and restaurants are wonderful!1 It is a very relaxing place to stop and stay a night or two if your traveling along the Mosel River. Once a year the Bernkastel-Kues weekend Winefestival triples the population, but is a wonderful time to visit and taste the wines. It can be a little touristy at times, but you would never regret putting this little village on your agenda for at least a stop over and some wine. It's like stepping back in time, just incredible.

During our cruise of the Mosel River, we spent a day in Bernkastel. We had a walking tour of the town. The market square here is full of the colorful buildings and temped us to take photo after photo. Our guide pointed out a rigging on the city hall used to punish residents by public humiliation. This was for non criminal acts, but used to force people to conform to acceptable behavior. As the walk continued, we discovered Bernkastel is full of picturesque squares, often centered with a statue and surrounded by gorgeous buildings. Many people in our tour later named Bernkastel as one of the 2 or 3 most beautiful and interesting towns we visited on the Mosel River.

We went here for an afternoon ride through the vineyards of the Mosel. The Town is absolutely beautiful and the old houses are amazing. A must view for all German wine lovers. We then took the Mosel road down to trier , I would recommend that if you want to see the steep wine hills of the Mosel.

Like walking into a fairytale this place is the best. Loved the buildings, the surrounds, the vibe it gave. Spend time in this marvellous little town and you will not be disappointed. We loved it.

The town of Berncastle-Kues is a wonderful old city, with no cars and many old buildings. It is well worth visiting, but not worth it if you are going to the Christmas Market. I have been in the city before in the summer and loved it, so thought it would be a perfect place for a visit to the Christmas Market. There are very few booths and most of them sell food. Not much selection if you are looking for Christmas decor. If you go, plan your trip for another time.

A very nice place to visit, where you get a feel of what the life was around the 16th century! There's a lot of preserved houses. From the Markplatz you can walk uphill to the ruins of and very old castle. The way to castle goes by grapevine, and from the top of the hill you have a fantastic view of the Mosel valley!
