The Altportal (old city gate)in Speyer is worth a visit. It also used to be a prison. It has a very nice clock too. Do climb the many, many steps and overlook Speyer and the environment. When you hire a guide you do learn a lot about this interesting building.

The Altportel is a medieval gate to the city of Speyer. It stands at the opposite end on Maximilian Strasse from the Cathedral. Beautiful landmark surrounded by cafe's and shops. Enjoy the sites.

Sit at the Aran and have a stunning view, we did never went up on the tower but still admiring the place when we are sitting outside enjoying the drinks.

I did not find this in any of the other reviews or even of the website from Speyer tourism department but the sign at the tower says it is open only from April 1 to October 30 each year. Quite disappointing as I tried to visit in December :(I imagine that the views are as amazing as the others have described

We have visited Speyer three times now and climbing the Altportel has become a must. Yes, there are a lot of stairs, but there are interesting rooms to stop in along the way if you need to catch your breath. Besides, this is one of the tallest Roman gate towers in Germany, so you have to expect some stairs. The incredible, commanding views of Speyer and the surrounding Rhineland Palatinate make it totally worth the climb. Bring a bretzel from the kiosk below and a water bottle (or a beer) from Rewe (grocery store) and hang out for a while. I love Speyer and the Altportel is our place to drink it all in. I can't wait to do it again. Be sure to look out for the ancient graffiti carved into the walls and please do not add your own.

Just down the street from the Dom Speyer (cathedral) and in the middle of midtown is this impressive gateway. Not sure of the history of this particular gate, but is was neat to see in the middle of the more modern parts of Speyer.

Als man das Altpörtel vor einigen Jahren restaurierte, fand man in der Wetterfahne eine Flasche Wein und eine Zeitung.Das Altpörtel ist ein exquisit erhaltenes Stadttor von dem aus man eine tolle Aussicht hat, in dem man heiraten kann, in dem Ausstellungen stattfinden und das jahreszeitlich geschmückt und angestrahlt Herz und Auge der Speyerer erfreut. Am Fuße des Turmes laden Straßencafés zum Verweilen ein.

Bei einer Führung durch Speyer besuchten wir unter anderem das Altpörtel. Nachdem stufenreichen Aufstieg sind wir mit einem schönen Blick über das abendliche Speyer belohnt wurden. Wenn ich es bei der Führung richtig verstanden haben, kann man bei klarer Sicht und natürlich am Tage bis zu den Vogesen sehen. Die Kamera sollte man nicht vergessen.
