Loved our river cruise. Listened to the rick Steve's pod cast on the way down to learn a little more about the sites. Great viewing of many castles and towns. Enjoyed a nice dinner it st goar and then train ride back to Bacharach. Perfect afternoon/evening.

Going upstream from Koblenz to Rudesheim takes about seven hours but it is a very relaxing and scenic seven hours. My advice is get a seat near the front, not that it's that busy but you get the best views and experience, in my opinion. Lots of great views of vineyards and of course dozens of towers and forts. Good opportunity for photographers, a few really top-notch views in there.

If you like ruined castles (actually old as well as made-to-look old) you'll enjoy the journey on the Rhine from Bacharach to St Goar. While KD and other carriers cruise the river for much longer stretches, I wanted a taste, not a long trip, and this stretch of the Rhine is said to be its most scenic.. When you start at Bacharach heading towards St Goar you are moving DOWN the Rhine, so the trip in that direction is quicker than going the opposite way - it took from 50 minutes to an hour on the day I clambered aboard. Along the way you see not only castles, one in the middle of the river, the others looking down on it, but also lovely villages, dramatic fields among rock formations, and the climax of course: The Loreley!Actually, I must tell you that this rock, famed for the legend of the beautiful woman whose song lured sailors to their deaths, is, frankly, just a rock, and it underwhelmed this traveler. However, it is announced with a flourish, and the song associated with it, a beautiful ballad - I first became acquainted with it as a child, on a 33 1/3 record album called something like the Men of the Robert Shaw Chorale Sing Songs of Love - and I still remember some of the German words, though I don't speak the language. And the crowd on the boat goes wild!Actually, the boat wasn't overly crowded the day I took the cruise. t had only two days in this area of the Rhine, last month, in mid-October, and neither looked good weather-wise, but when on the Rhine, get on a cruise. It drizzled for all of the journey, still I, along with other intrepid, mostly Asian tourists and a group of school-kids braved the weather out on the deck - I had a seat under an awning which helped immensely, and was able to get many photos of the scenery, damp as it was. In fact to put it in a positive light, dark, dank days are perfect for the Romantic movement, German and otherwise, which really put this area on the touristic map. I left the boat at St Goar, along with several others - some were headed across the river to St Goarhausen, on the Loreley side of the Rhine (a car ferry connects the two cities), others were headed up to the castle above St Goar, which was my plan originally, but the rain, Romantic as it may have been, lessened my energy for either excursion, so I caught a train (and I highly recommend that for the journey back on a sunny day or rainy) to Bingen (upstream of Bacharach), but it was still raining there as well, so I headed back by train (the tickets are fairly cheap and very easy to obtain at ticket machines in the largely un-manned rail stations in the villages, though you must have exact change) to Bacharach.Rain or no, I wouldn't have changed this day for the world! I'm so glad I got to cruise, and even though the Loreley did not work her whining wiles on me, much of the rest of the trip did - highly recommended day activity - rain or shine!

This is a picturesque portion of the Rhine with views of castles, cute towns, steep vineyards and train tunnels. Food and beverages are offered along the way. You can cruise from one town to another or bring a bicycle and cruise one way and bike the other.

We took a day cruise from Bingen to Koblenz. This was on recommendation as to the prettiest part of the Rhine... A good call!Saw lots of castles, vineyards and was very picturesque too.When getting to Koblenz, the Rhine flows through low hills rather than the stunning ones upstream, and there are very few castles too after Koblenz.The commentary during the cruise was good and gave you a lot of information.If you have an Eurorail pass, there is no charge for this trip.

We were staying in Sankt Goar and took the train to Bingen. From there, we bought tickets for the KD Line boat back to Sankt Goar. It was a 2 hour ride and was so relaxing and enjoyable. It was a very scenic part of the river and we saw many castles. One thing we really enjoyed was the narration. One pre-recorded voice said the description in German and another spoke in English. Great ride and there was full service food and drink on board.

Took this from Bacharach to Sankt Goar. Glad we did it, but for us another hour would have been painful. We weren't sure whether we were "cruisers" or not before we went, this was a great way for us to decide. Followed the RS plan. The extra time in Sankt Goar bordered on being too much as many of the businesses there were "out of business".

my husband and I stayed in Mainz, and on recommendation from tripadvisor, took the train to Bingen to start our cruise there. We walked down to the dock and purchased tickets one way to braubach because we wanted to see Marksburg Castle. We cruised for about 3 hours, and although it was cold it was wonderful. exactly what you expect to see- castles on every hilltop surrounded by grape vines and charming homes along the riverbank. if you are going to marksburg and intend to train back be aware that the train only runs on the opposite side of the river. we had to catch the boat back to boppard (the next stop on the other side) which took 1 hr (its much slower going upstream) to jump back on the train.

Just buy tickets at the booths located at every dock. My wife and I purchased tickets ahead of time online and the captain almost didn't let us on the boat because he was unfamiliar with that method (even though we had a printout of our booking). That alone ruined the atmosphere of what should have been a romantic cruise down the Rhine. If it wasn't for this unprofessional logistical error, my rating would be 4.0That said, we ferried between Bacharach and Saint Goar - beautiful stretch of the Rhine boasting castles on every hilltop. Wine and tourism dominate the local industry, though towns are small enough to still feel original. Sleep in Bacharach, shop in Saint Goar, explore the other towns/castles in between.

We travelled to Sankt Goar from Bacharach and back. Could have spent days on that boat's top deck with a beer!
