Great carvings and paintings. Historically very interesting and only 3 Euro for a guided tour. Slippers are provided to save the beautiful hardwood floors.

My husband, our two children (ages 1 & 4 years) and myself visited the Basilica, Cistercian Monastery & Library and loved every bit of it. My mother-in-law is planning a trip to visit us and we're going to bring her here. Definitely a place you don't want to miss. So beautiful.

Ask for the English guidebook, which costs a couple of Euros. It will tell you all the up to date info. I've been here dozens of times since I was a kid, and it amazes me more each time. Don't forget the library, with the carvings by Riemenschneider, the Michelangelo of woodcarvers. Just a warning: The Basilica has skeletons of many saints, all gilded and covered with jewels. It's a sign of middle-ages devotion, not modern nastiness. Check out the Maibaum (Maypole) in front, with all the cool Bavarian figures on it. Waldsassen was the "Big City" when I was a girl, and it amazes me how much the place has shrunk in recent years. But definitely visit, you'll be so much richer for going.

Not to be missed: the glass coffins containing fully-clothed skeletons inside the basilica and the adjacent monastery library with its wonderfully carved wooden figures and balustrades. And if you're lucky somebody will be playing the church organ...

Very close to the Czech border, in the little Bavarian town of Waldsassen, is the Cistercian abbey which dates from 1133. The "modern" buildings you can see today date from the period 1681-1721. There are two reasons to stop in Waldsassen: the Basilica and the Library. The library, completed in 1721, was originally built in the 17th century, but was renovated into what you can see now: one of the most beautiful rococco rooms in the world. The full-sized wooden sculptures of the deadly sins and vices are worth the trip alone! Very cheap admission price, and if you don't speak German, ask the lady selling tickets for an info-sheet in English. (The info-sheet has all of the necessary details about the library you'll need.)The abbey church was completed in 1704, and was elevated to the papal title of "basilica minor" in 1969 by Pope John XXIII. This church, done in typical, very flamboyant rococco style, is a wonder to see. Highly recommended visit here, for sure! No admission to the church! It's especially beautiful at Christmas time, when the snow outside, and all the greenery in the church, make for a fairy-tale setting. If you're traveling between Munich or Nuremberg, and Berlin or Dresden, or you're driving to Prague, Waldsassen is well worth a few hours of your time. The Cistercian sisters that still live in the convent here also have a brand-new guest house and coffee shop (both with very reasonable prices too!)
