The museum is very informative - and together with Muttental - presents the very start of the coal mining in Ruhr gebiet. I like to have my lunch at the small tent-like restaurant outside.

This open air museum is on the site of an 18th century coal mine, which was filled in and became a brickworks in the 19th century. This in turn was closed and became a junk yard in the 29th century. All signs are in German and English, so all information on the history of mining and brickworking in the area is accessible to overseas visitors. I now know that early industrial chimneys were square shaped and why later on they became first octagonal and then round!

This was a great place to visit, though parking was a bit tight in front of the museum. The staff were helpful (especially when I shut my finger in the car door and needed directions to get to the hospital!) The coalmine visit was great, but not for the claustrophobic. Lots t osee round the site to help give you a picture of the area in the " heavy industrial age".

A guide in typical coal miners gear greeted the children with a loud "Glück auf!". Afterwards they were kitted out in the same way and went into the mine. There was real coal to mine and they did so while smearing themselves with coal dust (they were invited to do so). Then they tried to build a fire with the coal (unsuccessful). The children loved it while learning a lot about the history of coal mining.

Die erste Kohle des Ruhrgebiets gab es hier. Sie wurde gerade zu beim Garten umgraben gefunden, so nah an der Oberfläche lag die Kohle. Eine interessante Führung durch den Stollen und eine nette Fahrt mit dem Bimmelzug führt vom Parkplatz zur Zeche. Interessante Einblicke rund um die Zeche laden zu einem netten Sonntags Spaziergang ein.

Io e il mio fidanzato abbiamo visitato il complesso di Zeche Nachtigall in una fredda mattina di febbraio. Il sito minerario sorge nei pressi del fiume Ruhr, al di fuori del centro cittadino di Witten, ed è raggiungibile in circa 20 minuti a piedi dalla stazione ferroviaria principale di Witten. Il complesso è molto ben tenuto e permette ai visitatori di fare un tuffo nel passato di questo luogo e di comprendere il funzionamento di una delle più importanti miniere della zona. E' anche possibile prendere parte a tour guidati all'interno della miniera (in lingua tedesca). Ve lo consiglio, ne vale davvero la pena! I passaggi bassi delle gallerie e la luce soffusa delle lampade vi fanno tornare indietro nel tempo, facendo immaginare le dure condizioni di lavoro e la scarsa sicurezza in cui operavano i minatori per 10/12 ore al giorno.Lo staff è gentile e la nostra guida è stata molto cortese e disponibile. Io e il mio fidanzato eravamo gli unici visitatori del nostro turno e, siccome non parliamo il tedesco, la guida è stata molto carina a fornirci informazioni in lingua inglese. Abbiamo davvero apprezzato la sua disponibilità.Consigliato!

Бывшая шахта (использовавшаяся с XVIII века и закрытая уже около 100 лет назад) - с действующей паровой машиной, которая поднимала и опускала клети с шахтерами и с углем с глубины в 400 метров и которая занимает площадь среднего размера квартиры. Здесь же описание истории региона - который с XIX века был центром немецкой тяжелой промышленности, а сейчас пребывает в депрессии. В отдельном зале - макеты устройства шахт на протяжении 150 лет, менявшиеся с внедрением новых технологий - от ручных ворот к конной тяге и потом от паровых машин к электричеству. В музее много разных вещей для детей.

Das Muttental in Witten läd nicht nur zu einem Besuch der Zeche Nachtigall ein. Es ist auch wunderschön zum Wandern geeignet. Die Zeche selber zeigt einen Ringofen, die Maschinenhalle sowie der Besucherstollen sind auch sehr sehenswert. Nehmen Sie sich auch die Zeit, eine Fahrt mit der Muttentalbahn zu machen.

Een van de weinige musea waar je ook daadwerkelijk nog in een mijntunnel kan. Voor de rest leuk om te zien en toegang maar 3 euro.
