Excellent space and collection of gadgets but unless fluent in German a waste of time! What a pity as it could be great for tourists otherwise. A few English signs but not enough to make a visit worth while.

Its an very good museum & one of best i have seen dedicated to the development of computation technology, not just in the modern form as desktop, laptops & cellphone devices that we know of, but throughout ancient & modern human history. That being said, at some time if you are not a german speaker or reader it will get a little frustrating experience for you, i am sure that percentage of english speakers visiting this place must be small but i don't think it should be extremely hard to put english description of exhibits next to German. That would tremendously boost the international appeal of this museum.

We had a fantastic afternoon at this museum - we don't really read German but between the English signage available and working stuff out we found it interesting to get around know what we were looking at. Our nearly 10 year old loved it.I wrote a blog post about our visit, if you are interested: http://www.nobeatenpath.net/2014/04/24/heinz-nixdorf-museumsforum/

At time of visiting, entrance fee was €7, and a guided tour was €45 on top of that. You would think that it would be busy on a weekend, but I must have seen a dozen people the whole time I was there, so even if I had wanted to fork out that much for a tour, I don't know if they would have done it with so few people to guide (especially as I was probably the only English speaking customer). So, I made my way upstairs from the lobby area to the first level of the museum, I wasn't particularly surprised to see signs in German, but with no arrows to guide you through, I'm not sure how you're supposed to know what order to look at things (as the key point of the museum is to show the progression of computing, it would be nice to know what order to browse in). I found an interactive terminal and I saw it had English as an option, so I i thought 'Great, if I just have to select this each time, I will at least get some of the information' but as the afternoon drove on, I found fewer and fewer terminals with English as an option. Everything interactive which wasn't in one of these terminals was completely German, so I couldn't do any of those either. Several of the exhibits seemed to be working, but either through slightly misguided use or just sheer randomness, several just ceased to work. When I tried to get some assistance so I could at least leave them working for someone else, I was told by the staff that, 'They're prototypes, you can't expect them to work all day' and that they probably wouldn't be fixed for days.Of the few interactive things I could do, all were incredibly out-of-date. By far the most fun was on the Nürburgring simulator, but even this was jumpy, not particularly responsive and badly presented. The 'hall of fame' included Lara Croft, with five games to her name and a Steve Jobs who currently works for Apple... All the information and specimens in this museum are 10 years out of date or more (the one exception being a reference to windows Vista, which to be honest, could have happily been glossed over). There's no excuse for this in a museum about technology, there are so many simple things which could be done - a smart phone app and QR codes for multi-language signs, the previously mentioned arrows on the floor would help too. The one thing which almost impressed me was the pictured guide robot, which has a very limited selection of locations, and - as I found - will get completely confused and just stop. My final moan as an avid gamer is that the gaming section of the museum is abysmal, with just a small selection of the consoles which have existed over the last 30 years, no interesting game samples except donkey kong, mario bros and pong, the former two of which were running on a C64 emulator. Emulators are fine, but don't have them running in a window and at least give a peripheral to play them which somewhat approximates how they would have originally played. It's a great place to go if you like typewriters, there was loads of those for some reason.

At the last day of my short trip here I visited the Nixdorf Museum Forum - the world's largest museum on computers and information-communication. It really starts with the clay tablets from Mesopotamia via the Chappe optical telegraph, the Morse system, rooms full of old and newer computers and a complete model of a 1980's style computation control room. There is even a robot rolling over the second floor that lead's you via sensor technology around other walking visitors to an attraction of choice. Impressive, informative and well worth the fair ticket price (7 Euro?).

From 5000-year-old writing tablets, historical typing machines and computers, to the firstPCs and the latest software developments - this and much more is on display at the Heinz NixdorfMuseumsforum in Paderborn. Additionally, especially children will have a lot of fun with the latest games and some specially designed 'features'.
