when i went there, there was an exhibition where you can see famous international paintings. Also visit the 320 light on the 3rd floor. if you want a cityview, visit the 10th floor where you can see the Oberhausen city from such height :)

One of the largest gasstoragebuildings of old industrial times has become a place of cultural highlights , moments of awareness and great top view. A landmark 118m high , getting up with an inside Elevator , or by steps ( ha!! ),you will have a great view over all the "Ruhrgebiet " and nearby places worth to go.Inside the 100 m high space of Gasometer is used for Special exhibitions that are adapted to theunforgettable Impression of distance , space , ...I will not forget the wall of oildrums installed by Christo , or the ballon that crossed the world first. While at the bottom Level there will be exibitions. At this time there is an Exhibition about the most impressable peaces of art in the history, while in the top room there is a Light and Sound Installation you could listen for hours.Take the Chance ..

Exhibition is good. But I liked the light-show in the big open room of the Gasometer most. I just went on looking - fascinating!

We recently went to Oberhausen to visit the famed Gasometer. I had visited the place many years ago and had wanted to go back to it, to see if its magic still radiates. We went on a family trip with two young kids. The building is at first between boring and intriguing: tall but not spectacularly so, it has a monolithic quality. We bought tickets (a family pass is a reasonable 20 €), walked in, and started with the exhibition on ground floor. The theme was something like "the impression of beauty". It consisted of a collection of large photographs of paintings and sculptures, capturing the sense of beauty expressed by creators throughout centuries. Well... not! Some photographs captured masterpieces like Botticelli's Venus, others showed artefacts from Körperwelten, which is a very debatable choice as vestiges of some kind of "beauty". Obviously those were not suited for an audience of kids - those travelling with us, for example - and not an enjoyable for sights for many adults, too. The whole exhibition felt disappointing and out of place. Now, the highlight of the Gasometer is the splendid light show that takes place inside the main chamber. The show was the creation of a German artists team that produced something straight out of the principles of kinetic art in a soft, gentle, yet spectacular way. No need to cringe at the idea of artsy stuff that only self-aggrandizing people would value. Quite the contrary. The visitor can expect a soothing, mesmerizing and beguiling show that lends itself to amused contemplation in a very simple and straightforward manner. Our kids loved it, we loved it.The place deserves a five-star rating, minus one for the bad exhibition. If you are in the area, go straight to the light show and forget the exhibition.

As the name suggests this is a decommissioned gasometer. From the roof you get a panoramic view of the Ruhr region. Inside on two floors of this immense space is an exhibition space and on the third floor a light show is projected onto the ceiling. At the moment the exhibition consists of statues and full size photos of works of art from all over the world. These photos are of the highest quality and although they can not replace the original paintings to have so many masterpieces in one location makes up for this. The English and Dutch language audio guides are superb and guided tours are also available. We only had a couple of hours available but could easily have spent much, much longer. The only other similar idea I have experience of is the Atomium in Brussels. There is no comparison at all. The directors of the Atomium would do well to visit Oberhausen to see what could be done with their balls!

This building it can be boring but great at the same time, a person should know and choose when it is the time time to visit it, in my personal opinion i went a day when there was a Exhibition of abtracts images at the beggining and after that there was a concert of an Accordeon Orquestra. Also you can go very high above the building with the Lift and from above appreciate the whole Panoram of Oberhausen and close cities i would say.

What a pleasant surprise just steps away of the hotel Tryp Centro Oberhausen. The Gasometer was build 1928 with the only purpose to store gas produced by the local iron and steel industry. The massive structure has a 70-meter diameter and its height easily exceeds 100 meter. Visitors can access the rooftop via two lifts. The views are amazing!! Inside the huge cylinder visitors will find an art exhibition and many photos depicting that area in the last century. On the second floor the Gasometer offers an awesome light show accompanied by relaxing music. The light effects are absolutely amazing. Recommendable for all publics but those traveling with toddlers or very young children.

The display of the artwork was very well thought-out. Our guide was very good. The light show was exceptionally good and well worth allowing time to see the 20-minute sequence. Lunch was surprisingly good - expected burger and chips but had mezze type platters (group booking).

Easy to access with public transport, impressive landmark with views over the Ruhr. On a busy day the 2 lifts might not be enough.Within 5 minutes walk from a large indoor shopping center and boulevard with tens of great restaurants and bars. The first 2 floors are given over to the art exhibition while the main space is home to a spectacular light show.Entrance fees and drinks/food are very reasonable.
