This place is unique. The Museum has taken actual old houses and brans from the Medieval times from all over Germany, and transported them to this great open Museum, with guided tours, live animals, and amazing trail walks ideal for short hikes. The place is great for children and adults alike. Interesting and old fashioned fun. A couple of minor issues though, the staff are not friendly, there aren't that many places where you can buy food for children (so come prepared), and the cafes close at different times that are not well communicated to the public. Some of the attractions were closed as well, which was a bit of a disappointment for my kids. But overall, the idea is brilliant and we had loads of fun (and went very hungry).

Visiting this outdoor museum is like taking a step back in time. You are visiting a very modern Germany, but this place helps you appreciate how family, farming, and various trades developed over about a 500 year period. I found the place amazing and the Germans around me seemed as engaged as we were. Even though I don't speak much German, I could guess what they were saying about older objects on display and the way homes were laid out. It reminded them of other times and stories their grandparents had told them. This is a big place; pick a colored trail and follow it. Read everything you can and then ask questions. As an English speaker, I was glad to find staff members who added to my understanding.

We visited this attraction last summer on a beautiful day which was perfect for all the walking that we did. There are many buildings to visit and we enjoyed lunch there as well (soup, bread and later coffee and cake) which was very delicious. My teenage daughter's favorite part was the indoor museum with the life-like models depicting the history of the area through the years. We spent a long time in that area reading all the information and looking at the "models" in their "homes". It is not your typical tourist attraction and it was not very crowded when we went so we enjoyed it very much overall and would recommend it.

Very big open museum with lots of area to cover. There school, bakery, and wine presses were cool to see in person. The set up of the homes was also nice, though did start to look all the same after a while (the homes are from different locations in the Rheinland area). There are short descriptions of the building in several languages outside each sight but the information in each building was only in German. My children enjoyed playing with the old styled toys and checking out the animals.Overall it was a nice way to spend a summer Sunday.

I have visited open air folk museums in Scandinavia and of course we have our own Welsh National Folk open air museum in Cardiff. This open air museum compares well with them but on a smaller scale. The museum covers an area of a few miles and there are examples of buildings from various districts of the Rheinland grouped as "villages" to represent each area such as the Lower Rhineland , the mountain area and so forth. The buildings include farmhouses and barns, a church, craft workshops and stores. When we visited there was an exhibition of falconry as well as a cart wheel maker (cooper?). One of the highlights of our visit was to the large history exhibition where there is a street to take you through from the French and Prussian occupations through to Kaiser William and the World War One. There were "house windows" on each side of the street where there were interior settings for each period. I found the part of the dimly lit street of the Nazi period disturbing since you felt you were there and I was glad to get past World War two into the 1950's where it ended. There is an excellent cafe in the middle of the museum where you can eat local food. I had sausage and fried potatoes with bread from the on site old fashioned bakery. Well worth a visit.

It is quit a climb from the parking to the museum, with its 95 ha, one of the largest open-air museums in Europe. 65 Buildings from the Rhineland: residential buildings, farmyards, windmills, workshops, village community buildings (tante Emma laden, school and bakery, dance hall and a chapel). Most of the buildings were reconstructed in their 'original' condition after being moved. The oldest buildings date from the 16th century. Specialty: the at one time almost extinct heavy draught “Glan-Donnersberger” cattle and the "Deutsche Weideschwein", an 18th century breed of swine that cannot even be found in a zoo.

Ik kon me totaal geen voorstelling maken van deze plek. Het is dan ook een absolute verassende ervaring geweest. Vriendelijke ambiance, absoluut niet duur, erg ruim opgezet. De klim naar de ingang moet je maar voor lief nemen. Mooie locatie en niet onbelangrijk: in de buurt zijn genoeg restaurantjes om je dag mee af te sluiten.

Sehr schönes Freilichtmuseum mit vielen Aktivitäten. Nicht nur für Kinder interessant. Mit Anmeldung können sie z.B. Brot backen, Mäusefallen bauen und vieles Mehr. Durch einen elektronischen Führer (an der Kasse für kleines Geld) wird einem alles super erklärt. Auf jeden Fall etwas Zeit mitbringen. Im Restaurant gibt es preiswertes und gutes Essen, es darf aber auch eigenes verzehrt werden. Für gehbehinderte gibt es einen Shuttlebus auf Anruf am Parkplatz.

Meine Partnerin und ich verschenken lieber Freizeit als bloßen materiellen Mammon und so "landeten" wir an einem sonnigen Herbsttag zusammen mit den Schwiegereltern im Freilichtmuseum Kommern. Insgesamt betrachtet hat es sich für uns absolut gelohnt und jeder Einzelne von uns war begeistert , unabhängig des Altersunterschieds. Für die sehr fairen Eintrittskosten bekommt man eine Menge geboten, sowohl im Umfang als auch in der Abwechslung. Egal ob mittelalterliches Wohnen, die wilden 70er, altertümliches Handwerk, deutsche Geschichte, oder sogar eine tolle Blechspielzeugausstellung : Es kam nie Langeweile für uns auf. Besonders prima ist auch, dass man hier nicht nur ein "tristes" Museum gebaut hat, sondern die Mitarbeiter für zusätzlichen Realismus und authentisches Gefühl diesen Ort auch bewirtschaften und mit Leben füllen. Da wird das Mittagessen am uralten Ofen mit frischen Zutaten gekocht und eigenes Brot für den späteren Verkauf vor Ort gebacken und noch viel mehr. Gerade für Kinder und im Allgemeinen uns junge Menschen ist dies spannend, da wir die Zeiten ohne Computer, Kühlschrank und Co. ja kaum mehr kennen . Und das ältere Semester schwelgte gerne in älteren Erinnerungen :-) Einzig die Gastronomie vor Ort hat uns enttäuscht und verärgert. Die Mitarbeiter haben eine sehr seltsame Auffassung von Arbeitsteilung und nach fast 30 Minuten ohne Bedienung verließen wir frustriert die vor Ort eigens wieder aufgebaute Gaststätte eines früheren Familienbetriebs und haben unseren Durst dann provisorisch bei einem Kiosk auf diesem Gelände gestillt.Fazit: Eine klare Empfehlung für Jung wie Alt. Sehr unterhaltsam, umfangreich, abwechslungsreich und lehrreich . Jedoch empfehlen wir was Essen und Trinken angeht sich lieber selbst zu versorgen. Außerdem ist dieses Museum nur geeignet wenn man noch gut zu Fuß ist, aufgrund der schieren Größe und der damit verbundenen Laufwege, trotz der Möglichkeit mit der Kutsche umhergefahren zu werden. Für Kinder gibt es auch einen großen Spielplatz und der gutsortierte Andenkenladen lockt auch mit vielen lokalen Spezialitäten wie Honig, Konfitüren oder auch leckeren Fruchtweinen, toll! :-)

Ob Frühjahr, Sommer, Herbst und auch im Winter, ein Besuch lohnt sich immer. Viele schöne und spannende Veranstaltungen werden das ganze Jahr geboten. Am 1. Adventswochenende (29.+30.11.2014) findet "Advent für alle Sinne" statt, eine sehr schöne Einstimmung auf die Weihnachtszeit, so wie es Früher war.
