After heading into the museum, not knowing what to expect, and wandering around for a while, I came across a music exhibition and must have spent a good couple of hours watching videos, playing with the interactive displays, and listening to a diverse range of great music. It was a great place to spend an afternoon.

Worth noting: the museum is no longer located at Ostwall 7. Great selection of contemporary artists. Interactive exhibitions are really well-thought.

This museum is a must see if you like contemporary art and ideas. It also has a few great Picasso 's. We saw the 'industrial' exhibition which incorporated some interesting perceptions about the world finance ecology and de-instrialisation. Anyway it was challenging. Allow a good couple of hours. The U building is close to the train station and you can get to it easily by turning right when you leave the station. Just look out for the big yellow U and projections on top of the tall building.

Dortmund is not a major travel destination in Germany: it's known more for its football and beer rather than culture. The Museum am Ostwall has moved into a former 1920s beer brewery that has been thoroughly modernized and is on a ring road at the edge of the city. It's not the most inspiring location. The museum is part of a huge, multi-storied building that also houses cultural and conference centres and a tourist office on the surrounding Ruhr Valley region. The whole complex has a sterile feeling, with a vast, mind-numbing plaza in front of it. Go to the rooftop observation area for some good views over the city. The art collection in the museum is laid out nicely in modern surroundings, and has mainly 20th-century art, especially from German Expressionists and a well-known artist from the region called August Macke. What is annoying is that they don't allow photos to be taken! Frustration level was high! The museum is at Konigswall, not Ostwall.

When i got a map of central dortmund and my hotel it showed this museum in Ostwall.Well its not there any more.I asked 5 people for directions and they all got it wrong.It wasnt until i went in an Art Gallery that i got directions that were roughly correct.The building has a giant U on the top and is in the centre for creativity in Leonie Reygers Terrace.It is nowhere near Ostwall.apparaently they moved into this new building in 2010.Follow the red signs,look up to the sky and follow the U.that way you will save yourself a 1 and a quarter hour walk particularly frustrating when the museum was just 10 minutes walk from my hotel.Even my sat nav failed me.It wasnt even worth the effort.There is no museum merely collections of modern art in which i had not the slightest of interest.

Website says Paul Klee stuff there. 6 year old has studied Klee at school and is therefore excited about visit. Ask staff where the Klee is. They have none! Somewhat disappointed.

Ich finde das Gebäude (Dortmunder U), in dem das Museum Ostwall untergebracht ist, als Landmarke super schön. Es ist schon von weitem sichtbar und ein klares Erkennungssymbol der Stadt.Das Museum Ostwall ist in der 4. und 5. Etage. Wir waren mit der Ruhrtop-Card da, so dass der Eintritt frei war (5€). Große Taschen dürfen nicht mitgenommen werden und Fotos sind nur vom Gebäude/ Architektur, nicht von der Kunst erlaubt.Im unteren Teil des U kann man die fliegenden Bilder von Winkelmann betrachten. Auf 360° an den Wänden sind Beamer verteilt und werfen Szenen aus Dortmund (Brauerei, Campus,...) an die Wand. Ist nett anzusehen.Etage 4:Danach fährt man über viele einzelne Rolltreppen bis in die 4. Etage.Die Wechselausstellung "Anybody can have an ideal" zeigt sehr neumodische Kunst, die ich leider nicht immer verstanden habe. Z.B. einen Vorhang mit Taschen, in die Gegenstände eingefüllt waren.Ein großer Teil der Ausstellung zeigt Werke von Dieter Roth, der sich mit Lebensmitteln und ihrem Verwesungsprozess beschäftigt. Dort findet man dann das "Scheißkanickel" mit dem Untertitel "Karnickelköttelkarnickel" (und es besteht tatsächlich aus solchen) und zum Beispiel "Sauermilch auf Büttenpapier" und schimmelnde Banane. Sieht interessant aus, wenn man sich für Schimmelpilzstrukturen interessiert und riecht nicht, da alles hinter Glas ist.In einer hinteren Ecke fand ich Bilder von Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1), August Macke (4) und Picasso (3).Etage 5:Auf Etage 5 war ein großer Teil des Raumes mit räumlichen Skulpturen gefüllt,- einer Welle quasi in Zeitrafferphasen abgebildet auf ca. 4mal 15m, Drahtgebilde und Kugelobjekte, in denen man sich spiegelt. Sah alles nett aus. Das Highlight war für mich die "Kabelwolke" (weiß den Namen nicht mehr), die je nach Stelle und Entfernung andere Funkwellen aussendet, die man per Kopfhörer hören kann.Mein persönliches Fazit:Die Ausstellungsfläche ist sehr klein (nur 2 Etagen von 7 möglichen gehören zum Ostwall Museum), wir waren ca. 90Minuten vor Ort. Auf den anderen Etagen sind andere Ausstellungen, die ebenfalls Eintritt verlangen. Leider kann ich kein klares Konzept erkennen, da von allem etwas (und dann sehr wenig) geboten wird,- moderne Kunst, Expressionisten, Videofilme und Skulpturen. Ich würde es besser finden, wenn 1 Thema konsequent durchgezogen werden würde oder alle Aussteller der 7 Etagen zu 1 Thema ausstellen.

Oeuvres de différentes natures bien mises en valeur. Nombreuses oeuvres interactives, géniales!Différens musées sur plusieurs étages,expo temporaires sympatiques, modernes, accessibles et contemporaines.N'hésitez pas à aller dans la niche qui donne une magnifique vue sur la ville, ou boire un verre au restau du dernier étage.Génial!Accueil sympathique.
