The statue of Herman is gigantic. The funny thing is that you do not see it when you enter and then suddenly there is the statue of perhaps more than 150 feet; impressive. There is also a kind of outdoor playground (kletterpark). Unfortunately the restaurants are all tourist trapps.

Nothing to dislike. A remarkable statue in great countryside. There was a small shop & a couple of eating establishments on site.

A good place to stop while hiking through the Teutoburger Wald. Great views from the location, whether you pay to go up into the monument or just take in the area from the foot of the construction.

A windy road - take care - to reach it. A fee paying car park, plus a fee to enter the attraction too.Worth the visit - although a bit of a hike if you have difficulty walking or it is a rainy day.Nice meals available closeby for decent prices. Clean toilets!

We visited Hermann the German years ago and went back to see him again recently and they have really improved all the cafes and felicities that are around him. Good parking, toilets and places to have a cuppa. Lovely walks up to see the statue and would recommend this attraction.

This attraction is interesting from several perspectives, not the least of which is that it dominates the landscape for miles around. It was built to honor the German warrior Varus, who died fighting the Romans in the Teutoberger forest. Unfortunately, despite earlier belief that the monument was built on the site of the battle, we now know that the site was selected by the artist for its commanding view, not to mark a battle site. And the warrior is NOT named Hermann, a corruption of the word for "leader." This site is a must visit for the area. Admission to the grounds is free of charge, but climbing the monument itself costs 3 Euros. There is a small building on the path to the monument that provides lots of history on Varus and the sculptor who fashioned the monument. Tip: If also visiting the nearby Externstierne, you can get a combo ticket for 4.5 Euros to allow you to climb to the top of both landmarks.

The drive from Detmold up to the Hermann is via a road that snakes through the forest. The views from the Hermann are excellent however there is a charge to climb it. As they were expecting bad weather parts of the area had been closed so I would recommend visiting in the summer. There is a restaurant and souvenir shops however as I visited during the Christmas period these were closed.
