This is one of the best railway museums in Germany. It is mostly operated by volunteers and has limited opening days to keep down the running costs. Being in Germany there are many safety rules about being near machinery, which usually means hands off unless a professional is present. On a non-operating day it's a place pretty much to be avoided.On an operating day they are totally welcoming. There are train rides and instructions but not always in English. Northern Germans are friendly people and encourage children and families. The cost is very reasonable and well worth a visit on a public open day.The museum also provides mainline steam runs. My partner and I were lucky to get on a train trip around the Ruhr, on main lines, for 9 hours (3 hour industrial museum visit) for just under £100 for both of us. On board we rode in a Second World War carriage and was pulled by a Great War era steam engine. Totally friendly staff and cheap snacks and beer all day. This was a truly wonderful trip. The train was on time and left on the minute. The tour involved steel and coal industries, one of which was the last working foundry in Europe. The children and adults were allowed in the cab to pull the whistle. Simply a marvellous day out. All train and industry fans should visit this museum and try join their mainline steam days.

if you don't have te opportunity to be there on a steam day (20 sept in 2014 ),it is rather disappointing .Few comments in English.Lots of steam engines and coaches in the roundhouse and elsewhere but you can't get inside;Only for real train buffs..

Maybe we came on the wrong day, or at the wrong time or just came... They had an array of steam locomotives which were very impressive. But my kids wanted to see the inside and could not. They wanted to have a go in one - but could not. We looked at wagons in different stages of decay - but neither could you go or look inside. I am sure this could be livened up a lot making it worthwhile not just for the dad but all of the family

Not every day you get to ride on a railbus; mining train and push the handle on one of those Great St Trinian Robbery track carts. This is a smallish museum but fills a half day with great exhibits and things to ride on. We are train fans and the exhibits are well maintained and interesting. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would love to have had time to do the longer railbus journey down the Ruhr available certain days. Missed a steamiest due this coming weekend.

Das Eisenbahn Museum ist wohl ein Pflichtprogramm für alle die in der guten alten Dampflok Zeit schwelgen. Mit unter gib es auch noch Fahrten mit alten Dampf betriebenen Fahrzeugen. Zahlreiche Eisenbahnen aus Dampf und E-Lok Zeiten sowie Wagons befinden sich auf dem riesigen Gelände.

Tag der offenen Tür, Dampf über der Ruhr oder ein ähnliches Event stattfindet. Dann dampfts, quietschts und riecht nach Schmiere. Wie man sich 'früher' vorstellt. Ideal auch mit kleinen, interessierten Kids.

... angekommen am Bahnhof Dahlhausen steht man vor dem nichts. Keine Tafel, keine Wegweiser ... nichts. Hat man sich dann durchgefragt steht man an der Busstation ... und stellt fest: "fährt nur einmal die Stunde ( von vom Busausstieg geht's dann immer noch etwa 5 Minuten zu Fuss ) oder man geht gleich zu Fuss etwa 20 Minuten.Das Museum wirkt an diesem gewöhnlichen Wochentag lieblos. Endlich angekommen bezahle ich bei den drei rumsitzenden älteren Herren und frage nach einem Taschen-Situationsplan. Spröde Antwort: "hängt draussen und dann können Sie frei rumlaufen". Zahlreiche Exponate sind nicht angeschrieben (zB ein ganzer Güterwagenzug). Im Areal hat es einige Tische und Bänke um sich zu verpflegen. Die Tische scheinen schon seit längeren keine mit Waschmittel getränkten Lappen gesehen zu haben. Nach drei Stunden habe ich das Museum wieder verlassen ... zwei Herren sitzen immer noch dort. Statt rumsitzen wäre "optimieren" (putzen, Beschriftungen gestalten ((das kann man auch ohne grosse GeldMittel mit etwas Fantasie machen)) ).Grundsätzlich verfügt das Museum über zahlreiche sehr wertvolle Exponate ... besser (mit Liebe und Herzblut für die Sache) präsentieren wäre ein Ansatz.

War dort mit meinen Neffen - schon öfters - wenn er zu Besuchist...diesmal mit Ruhrpott Card. Es ist schön zu sehen - wie sich im Laufe der Zeit - die Fragen..ändern meine Neffe ist jetzt 16 und ich bin mit ihm seit Jahren unterwegs...wir sind auch schon mit dem Schweineschnäuzchen etcl. gefahren

Liebevoll restaurierte Eisenbahnen, an den Dampftagen sollte eine Mitfahrt Pflicht sein. auch empfehlenswert in den Sommermonaten der Pendelverkehr regelmässig an Sonntagen.
