Try to visit the Mount of Profitis Ilias on Patmos Island at the sunset ,when people are gathering to meditate / enjoy the stunning view of the whole island / ispired by the magical sunset. Even if the church is close this place worths a visit just for the extraordinary location & atmosphere....l!!!!

If you can, just go eraly in the morning as soon as they open, as you can often find very big and noisy groups.

The road up to the chapel can be intimidating, because it is very steep!!!At least if you are on a moped. I couldnt go into the chapel, since every time I went up there,it was closed.But the view is just breathtaking...you can see everything around you, the nearby islands. If you are in Patmos, it is a must see!!

The Mount of Profitis Ilias on Patmos Island is the best spot for your sunset. It's the highest point on the island and from there you TRULY have a 180 degree view of the whole island. It's even more extraordinary when the sun sets because you see the complete Western coast line light up with firery colors. You also see the Monastery and the village of Hora light up. Just extraordinary. On top of the mountain there is a Chapel which bears the name of Profitis Ilias. Le mont du Prophitis Ilias est l’un des lieux emblématiques de l’île sacrée de Patmos. Surmonté d’un hermitage du 18ème siècle, et haut de 269 mètres, il offre une vue panoramique à 360° absolument exceptionnelle sur l’ensemble de l’île, la mer Egée, la côte turque et les autres îles.Par temps clair, on peut apercevoir au sud-ouest Astipalea et Amorgos, à l’ouest Paros et Mykonos, Ikaria au nord-ouest, Samos et Fourni au nord, à l’est la côte turque, les îles proches d’Arki et Lipsi, et enfin au sud-est Leros et Kalymnos.Et bien sûr une vue unique sur la partie sud du village de Chora, enserrant le Monastère de Saint-Jean. Que dire ? Venant à Patmos depuis près de 45 ans, c’est un lieu traditionnel de promenade, pour faire découvrir aux amis de passage l’une des vues les plus fabuleuses de l’île. Vous ne l’oublierez jamais !L’accès est facilité depuis la construction d’une route menant au sommet, certes raide, mais tout à fait praticable, en voiture ou deux roues. Pour les courageux, un petit sentier accidenté permet depuis le sud de Chora d’accéder directement à l’hermitage par la face nord du mont (environ 20 minutes). En juillet, précisément le 19 au soir, en fin de journée (18/19 h), s’y tient une fête religieuse traditionnelle qui vous permettra de pénétrer à l’intérieur de l’hermitage, habituellement fermé. Accès en véhicule plus compliqué ce jour-là ! Mais une petite balade pédestre fera l’affaire, si vous en avez la possibilité, en fin de journée !

Het hoogste punt van het eiland Patmos. Bij helder weer kun je van hieruit vele andere eilanden zien, tot en met de Cycladen aan toe.

Υπέροχη θέα, υπέροχο εκκλησάκι, αν και σπανίως θα το βρείτε ανοιχτό. Αξίζει να δοκιμάσετε την ανάβαση από το μονοπάτι που ξεκινά από τα δυτικά της Χώρας.

Dit kleine Klooster/kerkje staat op het hoogste punt van Patmos. We moesten vroeger naar boven lopen en dat deden we. Tegenwoordig is er een weg recht omhoog . Met de scooter best spannend en met de auto alleen in de eerste versnelling te berijden. We liepen vroeger naar dit klooster om te genieten van het mooiste uitzicht van Patmos en de oregano die rondom wild om het kloostertje groeide.. Als het een heldere dag is, zie je alle omliggende eilanden en zelfs Turkije liggen. De schoonheid van de omgeving is nog steeds onaangetast. Soms vind ik het jammer dat je nu met de auto en/of scooter naar boven kan gaan. Toch wil je het zien van dit mooiste punt van Patmos niemand ontnemen, want echt, iedereen die dit heeft gezien, blijft er met verwondering over vertellen.
