In a small spa town about 38 kilometers south west of Vienna, in the beautiful Vienna Woods, there lies the town of Baden, Austria. From the Roman period, many hot spring come right out of the ground near the center of this town. It now lies in the province of Lower Austria and it became the place to be for the arostocray of Vienna.The Roman Baths here are open 7 days a week, year round from 10am until 10pm and are a heavenly way to relax and enjoy a day or days.The bath consist of seven sections, the two large indoor pools, the indoor hot bath/jaccusi, the indoor sauna, the outdoor sauna, the two outdoor baths, the childrens wading area and playground, and the restaurant.The whole indoor complex is covered by one large glass roof which, I have been told, is the largest of its kind in all of Europe.The two large indoor pools, each at a differnt temperature (28 & 32 degrees C.), are for swimming and one for fun and therapy where water jets, water bubble beds, bubble seats and fountains come up in various places within the pools every 5 minutes for 5 minutes at a time.The two outdoor baths are differnt as well. One is at 30 to 32 degrees C. and has large jets for your back, head, and side, as well as a mushroom fountain to toally soak you, There are strong side jets, and a bubble seat area in the 4 areas of the 'four leaf clover' basins of this pool.The second outdoor pool is more for simple relaxation, has two large basins which are suspended in the air from where hot water pours out of 4 spouts to tumble down onto you. This pools is kept at between 34 to 36 degrees C. and had lots of seating all around for you to relax in.The indoor hot tub/bath is also in the 36 degree C. plus range and has soft side jets and bubble seats which alternate every 5 minutes from one to the other. This area is set in a neo Greek style with paintings and staues, all in a very quiet setting.The Sauna Area is for the not so shy. In Austria, most saunas follow the European Naturalist Rules (nude only), so you are on your own here. Take a large 'sauna' or bath towel and your bath robe. In the sauna, you sit on that towel as 'no sweat' on the wood seats is the norm. In the steam room, you do not take anything in at all, but hose down the seat before and after you use the place. There are also a number of different indoor saunas to choose from, at different temperatures. There is also one with hot marble slabs onto which you lay down on to absob the heat. Marvelous!A cold tub and of course the cold (even bucket) showers are available both indoors and outdoors.Large comfortable lounge chairs which flip back are in the sauna areas and the whole indoor and outdoor pool complex.For those with young children, the indoorpool complex, with a mean temperature like Hawaii, has a third wading pool and a childrens play tent.To round it all of, there is a restaurant where you can have lunch, dinner or snacks, including beer and wine, right at the poolside at tables with ample seating. You may also go out into the resaurant area in your bath robe for the special buffets put out, usually around noon.Prices are very reasonable with a 3 hour minimum, but for 18 Euros you can stay the whole day. Discount for seniors, people over 60 years of age. You need a 2 Euro coin for the lockers, but you get your money back so you can access your things as often as you like. Bring you flipflops, a good book, your aches and pains and enjoy your stay.Sven

Baden is very near to vienna like 30 minutes by auto. There are two pools in facility one of it is thermal pool and the other is just normal. Average age is something old, However you should try this baths. it is not only clean, also have warm water that provides you to stay inside many hours

As we normally do following approximately two weeks of non-stop touring museums, major attractions and landmarks in several European countries, we treated ourselves to a day of relaxation at the Roemertherme Spa in Baden, Austria. The spa is easy to get to from Vienna. We took the tram from Karlplatz Opera, which cost 4.20 Euro (each way) with its final stop in Baden. It takes approximately 45 minutes to get there and the spa is a few blocks and a short walk from the station. The spa is actually a combination swimming complex and spa. We found the staff to be friendly, efficient and helpful and most of them were bilingual (German/English). Upon entering the facility you pay for whatever facilities you wish to utilize (please note it costs extra to enter the spa/sauna area), as well as rental of a locker (2 Euros), towels, robes, etc. You can also bring your own towels and extras which will save you several Euros. As with most European spas, the dressing/locker area is coed. The majority of the facility consists of a very large swimming pool, almost like a mini water park with several smaller pools and whirlpools, both inside and outdoors. The spa/sauna area is connected to the pool area but in a totally separate area. There are a number of sauna venues along with several aroma steam baths, an infrared heat room, a cold plunge pool, several shower stations, and relaxation areas with lounge chairs, both inside and outdoors. We did not utilize the outside sunning/relaxation areas as the weather was cool and rainy (actually a good day to be indoors to utilize the saunas/steam baths). Upon checking in you are given a wrist bracelet with a chip which is used to gain access to the spa area, and the chip also serves as your identity for your food and beverage account if you choose to purchase any snacks, meals or drinks. You then settle your account when you leave the complex.Be advised that the spa/sauna facilities are coed and textile frei, meaning you must be nude to enter the saunas, steam baths and heat room. However, when inside the saunas you must sit on a towel and take your footwear/sandals off. This is the culture and sauna etiquette in many European countries, and although some individuals – especially those from the U.S., Canada and other puritanical cultures - find this practice at best uncomfortable, and at worst offensive, it really is no big deal and actually is quite liberating and refreshing. Overall we were pleased with our visit and left very refreshed and relaxed; but personally, we prefer the more traditional spas we previously visited in Germany and the Netherlands. Specifically, Roemertherme does not have any swimming areas in the spa/nude area, nor are there any whirlpools in the nude area. Consequently, to use these facilities you must enter the swimming complex with a swimsuit. We did not bring our swim wear with us to Europe and therefore could not utilize the swimming pools or whirlpools. Moreover, perhaps due to it being a Sunday, the swimming area was very crowded and inundated with children which made it very noisy and loud. Not the most relaxing atmosphere. Again, we knew this going in and these few negatives did not detract from our spa experience. We just prefer a venue that is totally a spa atmosphere with pools and whirlpools in the nude area where one can totally immerse themselves in a relaxed and serene atmosphere. We would definitely recommend the Roemertherme Spa for an afternoon/day of relaxation, and as a respite from all the hectic touring. Just be aware of the caveats noted above.

Though it looks a bit dated I would recommend it for a relaxing minutes after day full of walking. We liked the 38C outdoor bath a lot. The center is easy accessible from opera, bus 360. The trip takes around 40 minutes and cost around 12 euros for 2 one way. The center works till 10pm, so we came back to Vienna at 22.12 bus.

We went to Roemertherme with my friend in January. We took a 3-hour ticket, but it was enough for us, we managed to swim in both pools, use the whirpool and both open-air thermal baths several times and have coffee with a dessert. Take a daily ticket, if you plan to stay longer than that. Clean, nice, affordable, very relaxing, coffee leaves much to be desired (quite strange for Austria), but dessert was good. Anything you may need there can be rented but of course it's cheaper to take your towel and slippers with you. Please note, that sauna is a mixed one for both sexes and you need to register in advance in case you want massage or other procedures.

This was a nice place for relax with the family after a shopping session in Vienna. The city of Baden is not too far from Vienna. Half an hour drive from Vienna by auto or tram. Not too many Romans or … visitors. The place was not overcrowded and I’ll recommend it for family trip. The water was pretty nice with 2 large swimming pools, one warm and one a bit colder; my swimming experience was closed to an Irish shower. Classic sauna bath is available for a small extra charge. Our kids enjoy the whirlpool and small pool, for 3 full hours we fell like Donald Duck family. Nice wiennersnitzel meals for all after that complete the evening.

Great place to relax, hot water springs, large pool, great for family.Note: parking is free at the covered garage, just make sure to validate your ticket.Note: sauna costs extra and is required nude. if you come in swim suite you will get kicked out. Austrians are not puritan at all. Note: if you comer after 7:00 in the evening till 22:00 (p.m. 10:00) the cost of entry is 7-8 euro. The full day of course is much higher.

This is a very German Spa, but with an Austrian twist. There are many pools to choose, both indoors and outdoors. Some of the pools have hydro jet massage etc. which operate according to a set schedule. There is a lot of light and it is warm. You can get refreshments and snacks easily at the pool restaurant, and yes, you pay with the bracelet.There are Finnish saunas, hammams and other steam baths. The Finnish saunas look very Finnish, but the resemblance ends there. This is the German style sauna, with the Saunameister throwing the water on the stove, while us Finns want to do that ourselves :) Don't forget to have at the least two towels with you, because otherwise it is quite difficult. You need one to cover the seat and under your feet, maybe one to cover you - this is all nude mixed sexes sauna - and yes, one to dry yourself with. All that aside, it is nice to have sauna, even if it is not very hot and the Saunameister is throwing towels at you and trying to make it feel hot. Quite fun.
