This place is one of best maintained attractions I have visited. Beautiful, serene, full of wonderful things to see. We did a day excursion through the Vienna Woods and this was the best of the stops we made. Gift shop a little small and can get crowded if there is more than one busload of tourists there at the same time, but if you don't need to shop, this is not a problem.

Located in the southern part of the Vienna woods, this amazing (the name means Holy Cross)abbey has fascinating architecture of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. I went there as part of a half day guided tour of the Vienna woods. The surroundings, as is typical of the region, are deep verdant green.. The abbey itself was originally built in 1133 and has had numerous modifications down the ages. It is the oldest continuously occupied Cistercian monastery in the world. Cisterians are Catholics, also known as Bernardines, or white monks, who emphasize austerity and manual labour as a way of life. The chants by the present day singing monks are very popular and available as CDs.As one enters, one is greeted by the impressive Holy Trinity column (from the baroque period), which dominates the courtyard.. The beautiful nave is a classic example of Romanesque architecture in Austria. The long corridors are built in perfect symmetry, with an enchanting interplay of light and shadows. The fountain surrounded by exquisite stained glass windows is one of the highlights..Definitely worth a visit if you are looking to go out of Vienna.. the views of the countryside are stunning and the abbey itself a gem. Perhaps the best way is to take a day tour from Vienna.

Stift Heiligenkreuz ilocated in the middle of the famous Viennawoods is now more known because of the singing Monks. Those Monks brought out CD´s with Christian Chants and are so succesful that they even have been named in Hitparadecharts,. The Abbey itself is runned by Benedictine Monks who have theGoal: Ora et labore, which means Pray and Work. The Abbey owns a Winery and nice Restaurant. For those who are interesed the Abbey offers guided Tours. But These Tours have to be paid with a minimal Charge.

I very much enjoyed my visit to the Heiligenkreuz Abbey run by the Cistercians. There were many interesting things to see such as the cloister, the chapter house, the fountain. The monument in the courtyard for the Blessed Trinity was quite impressive.

A visit to this most sublime 12th century abbey was part of a day trip that we booked from Vienna, and the grounds and the abbey itself made for a tranquil break from the hustle of sightseeing. The architecture of the abbey and church is big and impressive, with amazingly high stained glass windows in the church and a lovely relic of the true Cross (hence the name Heiligenkreuz).

Yes, the Cistercian Monks at Heiligenkreuz are becoming more and more well known with the release of a few CDs, but that doesn't compare to actually praying with them!!! Our family stopped in and was able to catch their mid-day prayer at noon and it was amazing. They sounded great and the setting, in the old chapel, was incredible.Additionally- check out the side chapel (outside and completely seperate of the main church) that houses the largest relic of the True Cross outside of Rome (hence the name, Heiligenkreuz - Holy Cross). It is a much more modern chapel, but to be in the presence of such a relic is amazing indeed!

Abbazia benedettina…luogo tranquillo fuori Vienna, ideale per pregare e meditare. Visita guidata abbastanza veloce poiché i tempi erano ristretti (chiusura alle ore 11.45). Complesso monastico molto bello. Da non perdere.
