We had never heard of Csontvary but decided to see the collection since we had extra time. I should add that while I appreciate art I am a long way from a connoisseur. The exhibit blew me away with its vivid colors and 3-D effect. I highly recommend this museum which also tells the life story of a man who had huge talent and huge mental problems. A must see

I was a little hesitant to go to this museum because I had never heard of Csontvary, but am so glad my husband encouraged our visit. It was sad in a way to learn of his mental problems and that he was never recognized for the truly great painter that he was. His paintings actually "glow". Don't hesitate - just go!

This museum is recommended in the Lonely Planet Hungary guidebook, with Csontvary compared to Van Gogh. On closer scrutiny after my visit, I noticed it was his rather tragic life that was compared, not his art. This made a lot more sense. The art in this smallish gallery doesn't stand up to that of his contemporaries at all - the colours are garish, and the depictions of people and animals are woefully inaccurate! On the other hand, the gallery was free and the staff were very helpful...

Csontváry is a favourite painter of my companion so I went along for the ride. it was as the Hungarian phrase goes "a pleasant disappointment" or in English a very pleasant surprise. It seemed like a very comprehensive collection and the paintings were very atmospherically lit, in spacious gallearies. He has a very individual style which may or may not appeal. I personally really liked his work. A curious quirk of the visit was that we were invited to choose two free books after buying our tickets. Elsewhere we found these books for sale at a price well over the value of our entrance tickets.

I came upon this artist by chance in Budapest (2010) and was immediately captivated by his landscape of the Greek theatre at Taormina, Sicily. It may be best to think of him as a colourist. Sometimes the colours are vibrant. The famous Bridge at Mostar will show you how he saw the old bridge, destroyed in the conflict after the disintegration of Yugoslavia. Elsewhere, a more subdued palette is displayed in The Lonely Cedar which I would describe as wistful, perhaps even melancholy. The day visit to Pecs in order to visit this museum was a highlight of my travel to Hungary in 2012.I'm most grateful to a Hungarian contact who mentioned the hung.art website to me. It's a treasury of Hungarian painting. Why not have a look? You'll be able to see if Csontvary is to your taste. By using it, I discovered Aba-Novak. To me this is another fine artist but these 20th century painters don't seem to be widely known outside Hungary. Perhaps this is not surprising, given the lamentable history of the last hundred years

This is a quirky art museum, devoted to an artist who created his work at the margins of society, and was frustrated by his inability to be recognized for his greatness. Frankly, the artistic quality of some of the work is at least debatable, but the story of the artist is fascinating.

painings are great and impactful, but explanations are not so, need to go prepared or buy a guidebook.Do not miss the drawings, they tell you much about the creation process

Really interesting. An artist who I was not familiar with but apparently should be. Would have been really nice to have some more in depth explanations in English. The biography was useful though.Free entry because it was a public holiday.

The life history of this painter is so interesting so be sure to read it before viewing pictures. The paintings are massive and colorful with a variety of subject matter. I was impressed and wanted to know more.

Csontvary is the second best painter of our age - according to Dali, who is obviously the number one in his own opinion :). The museum exhibits some of his best works. Impressive paintings, visiting recommended.
