Budapest in general is the country that made me the bigger impression so far. The theatre is just amazing, really big on the inside and very very impressive. The architercture is victorian and once you enter it feels like you are in a palace. You can find really cheap tickets of three euros each but for very specific seats and concerts but it is completely worth it!Hungary has a great history in classic and romantic era concerning music and whoever is interested in these gendres of music should consider paying a visit.

I saw Anyegin in February and it was awesome. The opera house is polished with gold and historical architecture, and was a great atmosphere. You can get a reasonably good view from any of the booths. Dress nice! For girls a dress is good, and for guys a buttoned shirt and pants will suit.

Went to see The Golden Brush in Nov 2013. It was my first time at the Opera House and I was very impressed. Lashed out and got a special Box it's worth doing this as the cost of the tickets is worth every forint, great value for money. The auditorium is beautiful, the Grand Staircase is also beautiful. I've never done the tour but I'm sure it would be informative. I have been back since and the the plays never disappoint.

This - popular with the locals - music theatre is a treasure. I went to The Land of Smiles, a Franz Lehar operetta - a light hearted jolly piece. It was well sung, and well produced and it was very cheap. The dancing and bravado shown by all on stage was also top-notch stuff. I had a great seat near the front for about £8. A super evening out in Old Pest and a piece we never see in London. The theatre also does a range of musical theatre shows from our era too

We bought tickets online before we went to Budapest! It was a great experience, we saw the classic A Christmas Carol with a Hungarian twist! :) the musical was in Hungarian but they have english translation on top.... So it would be best to get seats on the second floor. One of my favorite to do in Budapest!

We went to see this performance last night and were lucky to get tickets. The Land of Smiles by Lehar Ferenc is one of his best 1923, in our opinion, as it has beautiful melodies, which requires technical ability to sing.Unfortunately, none of London establishment has this piece in their repertoire and has not been sing since 1955 in London. We are always a bit critical about performances as my husband is in the same business and he always finds some things to improve upon. However, apart from some dance routines, which our opinion, were not strictly the apart of the operetta, we found the production good. The main participants were young and talented. The performers and quality of singing was excellent. The staging was very clever considering the number of different scenes that take place in rapid succession. During the overture we see through a misty gauze we see tho two young children imagining exciting life in a distant land. A land of smiles. In reality, this is not a story with a happy ending. It was sung in Hungarian with German surtitles, so you need to know a little about the story before hand. However, my husband is used to this by now and it did not bother him. The libretto was written in German by a Hungarian composer. The strict routine is to sing the piece in the language the libretto was written, so for example, My Fair Lady, would be sung in English with a Hungarian surtitles. Seating is generally good, but we will try to get tickets next time either to have a box or somewhere in the dress circle. We bought the tickets through their 'jegymaster.hu' website. It is the best way to get them as they are usually sell out quickly as prices are very reasonable. We paid HUF 9200 for two tickets. The system also reminds you a day before that you have booked a performance. The best way to get there is by public transport as it is just off the Andrassy boulevard. As it is now Christmas time the boulevard was lit up beautifully. There are always many excellent productions offered throughout the season.Enjoy!

People tend to confuse the Opera with the Operetta theater. Especially that the 2 places are not too far from each other. But they are separate places, and both of them are worth a visit. As I really enjoy musicals compared to opera, so I prefer the Operetta rather than the Opera. First time I've booked at play, I was amazed. I've been to musicals back in my small home town, but this was something different. The scene is very modern, so with a great script they can mange to make a show that will blow you away. If you are not speaking Hungarian, you will have subtitles (well, not sub, as there is a led display on the top of the scene and you can read the translation there). The building itself is a piece of art. You should definitely visit it, but beware, you will have to book months in advance, as the tickets are sold quickly.

we wanted to go to the opera but didn't book ahead so seats were limited so we missed out. We did do the opera tour which was very interesting (not very long) and one point the seating is wooden and a long performance like the opera edgar would prove to be very uncomfortable
