Yesterday I flew over the Holuhraun eruption site in a Cessna 206 with Myflug. I was blown away! It was an awesome experience and I would recommend it to anyone who will be in the area. In fact, I'd make a special trip to do it if I were you!

took a tour to see the current eruption. Fantastic, several fly bys, with height and angles as requested by us. Very nice pilot and highly recommend this tour/operator

This was an amazing experience. There was a "free day" on my tour of Iceland, and five of us and our tour guide decided to splurge on a flight to see the erupting volcano. How often do you get a chance to see a volcano erupting? This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We flew around the eruption about six times. Everyone had a window seat, and half the time the eruption was on my side of the plane. The flight to and from the volcano was scenic, but not worth the price. Despite the tiny plane, the flight was very smooth. It was definitely worth the splurge to see the volcano.

Wow - I don't think I can add much that other reviewers haven't said, other than if you have a chance to go - do it! We planed our vacation for the US Thanksgiving holiday period a while ago. Turns out my 11 year old was learning about Iceland and volcanos in school. A flight was a no brainer. The cost was about $350 USD per person, but they gave my daughter half off because she was under 12 years old. Wow...We had never been in a 6 seat Cessna airplane before, so we were a bit weary. However, the flight was very smooth, the pilot was excellent, and we lucked out with incredibly good weather. (Just in case, the plane is equipped with air sickness bags and a place to store a water bottle). The flight did leave from Aukeryi. It took about 30 minutes to get to the eruption site. The pilot looped over the site 7-8 times over about 30 minutes as well, and then we headed back. So the entire flight was about 1.5 hours. Our flight mates were Danes and great fun as well. The pilot was full of great information and answered many questions. What a job for him - to be able to observe this wonder and beauty on daily basis. It was winter, but I was shedding layers in the plane. By the time you get over the caldera, you can feel the extra heat from the eruption. I will say the scenery on the flight of the mountains, countryside and the city of Aukeryi were spectacular as well. Our funny observation? The lawyers in Iceland don't have their hands in everything. There were no release forms, etc. to sign. Sign your name and give them your nationality, don a headset and get in the airplane. How refreshing that I didn't have to send 30 minutes filling out forms!

I flew with Myflug to see the eruption site and it was an amazing experience. You can only have this kind of experience in on life time, and I had it. Even tough it was winter time, the weather was great, blue sky, and we even had the chance to watch an amazing sun rise just above the volcano, you can't get any better than this. While we were flying to the site, the lady pilot was giving us a tour, telling us all the information about the surroundings. The pilot was extremely professional and a damn good pilot, none of us felt the plane landing :| I recommend Myflug to all people that are interested in having this kind of experience, you will not regret.

I won a flight over the eruption in a Facebook raffle (the "like and share" kind) initiated by Mýflug in early September and after a bit of juggeling around with the leave schedules, we got to go and visit Iceland (twice in a year, this is a new record, despite the fact that we've been coming here for 15 years now). We've planned a weeklong stay and took the flight over Hólahraun Sunday Oct. 5th in the afternoon. It was probably the last flight that went from Mývatn before the airfield closed over the winter (Mýflug is now in Akureyri until the spring, I'm told you'll find them there in hangar 13 now :-) ). It was truely a once in a life time experience, I have never seen anything like it. To stare into the mouth of an erupting volcano is simply breathtaking and I think these pilots are among the luckiest people in the world to be able to go there several times a day :-)Mýflug did an excellent job of taking care of us. The weather was deteriorating a little earlier than expected, but the pilot decided it was okay to go. He made this experience a unique one for us. The Cessna is a very cute little plane, the wings are above the windows, which makes for a good view and it's easy to take good pictures. The pilot went back and forth and passed the eruption several times, so everyone could see properly and we flew high enough to be able to stare right into the crater and watch the earth boil. The twilight (it was past 4 in the afternoon) made for some very nice lighting, even though the skies were a bit overcast. I am by no means an expert photographer, I'm just a girl with a Nikon. My pictures do not do the beauty of that eruption justice, but I will share a few all the same. If you get any chance to go up, don't miss out on it. Prepare to be amazed and I promise you will not be disappointed. Thanks again to Mýflug for making this possible for us! I will most certainly be back to fly with you guys again some day, eruption or no eruption :-)Christine

...chance to see an active volcano. We delayed our departure from Myvatn to take this flight- and were so glad we did. We were in the smaller of the 2 planes- 5 passengers plus pilot. It was a little slower, so took a little bit longer to get out to the volcano- but we prefer the high wing design of this plane. The views of the erupting volcano and the river of lava were just spectacular. The pilot made several passes back and forth past the eruption so that both sides of the plane could see. There was a little turbulence from the up drafts, but our pilot kept things pretty smooth- I never felt afraid or unsafe. This was definitely one of the highlights of our Iceland trip.

Pilot was skilled and friendly. The price of the eruption trip was a fraction of the cost of doing it from Reykjavik or Akureyri. It was disproportionately so in fact. I flew from to Akureyri from Reykjavik by domestic flight, rented a car, did the eruption flight as well as sightseeing at all the famous sites around Myvatn and stayed overnight and had a lovely dinner in Akureyri, all for less than what it would have cost me to do just the eruption flight from Reykjavik. That makes me a very happy camper.

I recently took two separate flights from Myvatn in their Cessna over the erupting volcano (Holuhraun). I sat up front the first time and at the side (middle) the second time. I had different pilots each time, who although were only half my age (!) were very capable and I felt very safe with them. Each one took a slightly different route, possibly because of the direction of the wind and the volcano blowing, so I got two different views, one slightly higher. Both were fantastic. Would highly recommend this trip (twice!), while the volcano is still erupting. Great little operation. First flight was cancelled because of sandstorms, but I was booked on the next day - they don't fly if it's too dangerous! There is also a slightly bigger plane, with wings below the windows, that can go a little lower, I believe, but the view wouldn't be as good for photographs, so if you're a photographer, ask for the Cessna.

I took four flights with Myflug, three of those over the volcano. With so many flights I flew with almost every pilot and every single one of them was fantastic, very friendly and very safety conscious. The landscape is beautiful especially coming up over Askja crater after the lava fields, and this is the only way to see Askja right now with the roads closed. There are no words for flying over Bárðarbunga volcano, its awe-inspiring/amazing/beautiful/incredible!!!! Don't think about it just go!!! Like I said I went 3 times!!! Its worth every cent and these guys are by far the cheapest since they are the closest. (They are located in Mývatn not Akureyi). Don't worry about the time of day you go. My first flight was at noon and the lava is so bright and the lava fields black so its always great viewing.
