We visited as part of a cruise and were shown around by a local guide with a strict time frame before the boat would depart.The site is very interesting, however the guide seemed very intent on giving the ENTIRE history of the site, in great detail, in the limited time. The orchard, trees and 'back buildings' were covered in great depth, leaving the monastery / church itself to be covered in a rush, made worse when we were told that there was no admittance for a while (we assumed there was some church use).So the highlight (for us) was only covered in a great rush. Several of the party had to leave for the boats early, as they didn't want to / couldn't "run" to be there on time.Disappointing, but the overall site is well worth a visit.

Valaam, the ancient monastery on the archipelago in Lake Ladoga, is reachable from Sortovala or from St Petersburg on a hydrofoil.We took the day trip from St Petersburg on a late August day in 2006. The hydrofoil leaves very early and gets back late, but it is a glorious trip up the Neva river, past the Schlisselburg fortress and then across the wide open water of Europe's largest lake. If the weather is good and the lake is smooth then it's fine.You get about 5 hours on the islands, but that is enough to get a taste of northern Russian monastic life, to get out into the forest, to discover hidden lakes, on an island in a lake...Catering on board the hydrofoil is a bit like on an airplane, so you might want to take some extra supplies of bottled drinks and chocolate bars with you. Oh, and take a book or other reading matter as you have to sit still on the boat for a long time...If you are staying in St Petersburg for any length of time and want to get out into the Russian countryside, this is well worth the visit. And you can add the province of Karelia to your list.

Top place to go, if going to russian karelia. Archpelago is beutiful and monastry is great. Monastry has renovated and when we visited main church was underconstruction (was potatoe storage in soviet times and valaam was seamens hospital). You can take boat from Sortavala app 45 to 50min to Valaam several times a day. There are also boat trips from st Petersburg. In Sortavala tour agents sell guided trips there too. In Valaam is three hotels (dont know prices - been only a day trip). One way to get Valaam is to take bus trip from Finland to Sortavala, and stay overnight, in these trips you can have a groupvisa (65e summer 2012) and total starts 165e.

Located in the largest Ladoga Lake's island, which is also the largest lake in Europe, Valaam Monastery and its archipelago is one of the most enchanting places in whole Europe.I got there the first time in August 2006 and got back in September 2011, departing from Petrozavodsk, heading by car to Sortavala and then, reaching the island by hydrofoil in approx 50 minutes.August is not the best time to visit the Monastery because of so many tourists and pilgrims, but in September it's much more quite and pleasant than one can expect.Once you arrive at the monastery, you can take a visit and if you're lucky enough you can also experience the Service and the Valaam monk's choir singings. You can also have a meal in the Monastery's refectory and enjoy tasty home made products at a very small price.Then you can walk around the island, respecting its beautiful nature.Valaam is definitely one of my favourite places around Northern Europe.

Приехала туда с группой туристов. У нас был замечательный гид, водил нас по святым местам, рассказывал про историю монастыря. Кормили в столовой при монастыре, ночевали в Игуменской гостинице. Тихая и прекрасная природа. Действительно святое место.

Я знаю, что многие ездят на Валаам в качестве туриста, который покупает круиз по монастырям. НО....вы никогда не увидите и не прочувствуете все чудеса Валаама за несколько часов. Я там бываю как волонтер и работаю на благо монастыря. Это ни с чем не сравнимое место по силе и духу. Там происходит волшебство и меняются жизни. Приезжая на Валаам на длительный период вы создаете нового, лучшего себя!

Попасть сюда можно только по воде с мая по сентябрь. Мы доехали до Сортавалы на машине (280 км от СПб) и затем по воде - на "Метеоре" 45 мин.Самое первое впечатление от Валаама – это необыкновенная свежесть и чистота воздуха, напоенного запахами хвои, пропитанного можжевельником, который вдыхаешь, едва сходя с трапа "Метеора" на остров. "Метеор" останавливается в тихой бухте, защищенной от холодного ветра, гуляющего на Ладожском озере. Красота северной нетронутой природы и атмосфера покоя не оставляет тебя равнодушным. Мощные сосны, ушедшие корнями в глубокие расщелины, тянутся к солнцу, волны Ладожского озера бьются о скалы. На Валааме находятся скиты, церкви и действующий мужской монастырь. Здесь, на Валааме, жизнь течет в другом измерении, совершенно особенный мир. Сюда, в это замечательное место, хочется вернуться, чтобы вновь прикоснуться к тайнам Валаама...

Прочитав роман Ивана Шмелева "Богомолье" Был очарован описанием Валаамского монастыря. Выдалась возможность - я съездил. Был очень впечатлен красотой, строгостью и величием монастыря, островов и природы в целом. Все места, знакомые из книг Шмелева, остались на своих местах. Монастырь живет, молитва творится. Север, Карелия, скалы и озеро...Да какое там озеро - целое МОРЕ. Одним словом - это нужно увидеть, почувствовать.Очаровательное и вымоленное место.

был там три раза 88 год. 2008 год и 2014 год- в моем ранге путешествий по объему эмоций и красоты природы-равных нет. Красиво безумно. Значимо для верующего человека. можно на день, можно на два.можно на подводных крыльях, можно на круизном, можно на яхте. всегда и во все времена.
