A pleasant walk from the George Hotel to the Opera House down the divided road which follows where the old city wall once stood. Now on both sides are many historical buildings and statues. There is a good guide book available locally which gives information about the city centre area of Lviv including this area. To the right of the Opera House was a market which had, among other items, several stalls selling the traditional tops and dresses all hand embroidered and at a reasonable price. We saw other examples on our travels but they were mainly machine embroidered and not of the same high quality. After visiting the Opera House then one can walk back through the old city area.

Very interesting walk, especially at this time with the protestors camp set up at one end. We were seeing history in the making and at the same time, citizens of Lviv going about their lives. The Opera House is at the end and is a lovely building.

Beautiful divided street, with the Opera at one end. A little gem hidden away in a little-known city in a little-known country - don't miss it.

The main street in Lviv translates to Freedom Avenue in English. The most iconic monument that can be found on this street is the statue of Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s national poet/hero who wrote Kobzar; the greatest literary work written in Ukrainian. Compared to its equivalent in Kiev, this Shevchenko monument is a much more nationalistic pantheon. During the Christmas season, Prospekt Svobody becomes a lively place due to the Christmas markets. The best time to visit is after dark when the lights go on. It is truly something that should not be overlooked. Furthermore, you should also visit the Christmas tree around December when it is unveiled to the public. The decoration is stunning and you will get the rare opportunity to see the Mayor of Lviv address the people.
