Do go inside it is well worth the visit, incredibly decorated baroque style, one of the most beautiful churches I have seen outside of Europe.

This centre piece in the main square has a charm and simplicity that is quite captivating as well as a very nice side garden. Morning or evening visits.

This Cathedral is well maintained and demonstrates the standard church architecture of the area. Of particular interest are the stations of the cross that show a unique artistic approach and are worth a careful look.

This remarkable construction is listed in a compendium of the Seven Most Beautiful Churches in South America. So far, I have visited 6 of the continent’s individual countries, and other than in Quito, I have not come across a more impressive example of religious architecture, as beautiful inside as it is in its exterior. This, the 3rd version, was constructed in the 2nd half of the 18th Cent., and although it is in harmony with the rest of the main square where it is located (Plaza 9 de Julio), it has distinct Italian as well as Hispanic features. The façade is symmetric, with two towers of similar shapes at each end, and between them, over the main entrance, a pyramidal porch. Balustrades, cornices, and Corinthian pillars provide interesting decorative motifs without breaking up the intrinsic unity of the design. Standing well back and facing the façade from the other end of the square, a lovely dome can be seen emerging from the roof, matching the cupola in the church’s interior. Entering, it is immediately apparent that the building has 3 naves, a horizontal transept, a stunning gilded tabernacle in lieu of an alter in the apse, and (corresponding to the external dome) a beautifully decorated cupola. The left and right naves are divided into various chapels and in their walls some lovely stained-glass windows are embedded. The central nave is supported by powerful pillars partially clad in exotic marble, and arches stretching the entire length of the church, and skillfully decorated with frescoes and mosaics mainly in brown and red colours. The ceiling is painted with abstract designs predominantly in blue and green, contrasting with the burnished colours below. The overwhelming impressions are of piety and great wealth conjoined ------- quite astonishing given the overall poverty that permeates this province. Where on earth did all the money come from? Those who gave their lives for independence are honoured by the Pantheon to the Northern Campaign that also contains the remains of two of the victorious Generals. This beacon that shines by day is also lit up at night, adding real magic to the entire square, and indeed to the city as a whole.

The main square of Salta is a treat, and the Cathedral is well worth a visit. Nicely maintained, and colonial in style
