Going up the "Cuesta del Obispo" (= the Bishop's slope) is a great trip. You need to travel along that road in order to get to / or returning from Cachi. You can take in nice views and stop at the top where is a little chapel. Be aware, that you should only travel this road in good weather conditions. Severe weather conditions such as fog or rain will make it a difficult drive. From Salta to the top of "Cuesta del Obispo" takes about 2,5 - 3h.

This is definitely one of the highlights in Salta. The winding mountain road climbs incessantly offering spectacular views with each turn. The weather is a key consideration since low clouds and rain may lower visibility to zero. It is best to take your time and enjoy the ride, maybe take a picnic to eat on your way down ( in case the height affects you).

We did this as a day drive out of Salta, with the aim to reach the pass at the Piedra del Molino. The main adventure here is the drive itself, particularly the very windy sections which lead to the Piedra del Molino at an altitude of 3348m. While the first part is well paved and wide, much of the latter part is on gravel road, generally wide but there are about 3 streches where the road is basically just one lane wide, two of these are relatively short, 1 km or so, the other quite a bit longer. There are not much colored rock areas, but some interesting mountains all the same and then there are these wonderful serpentines to experience, see and photograph !

If you are in the area, you can't miss this ride. This is a steep and winding stretch for 20km in route 33 (it connect Salta City with Cachi a small city). The road takes you from 1200 meters to almost 3500 meters on the top of the itself, there you will find a panoramic point called " Piedra del Molino" (an acceptable translation would be "Millstone"). Continuing over the route 33 you will find another interesting visits like "la recta de tin tin" over the "Parque Nacional los Cardones".

I have been on this beautiful road many times visiting small clinics that spin off to even smaller pathways into the mountains. No matter how often, what season, which type of transport (collectivos, ambulance, horse, remise) the vistas enthrall. "Por la duda" you might want to skip the ride during rainy season when boulders fall onto the carefully etched road or when the river may wash it out. There is one byway up to Las Zanjas that is a bone chiller...even by my book...better made on horseback over horse trails. So, if you are going to Cachi take a ride on the wild side on Ruta Provincial 33. PS There is a small family (Canizares) restaurant just south of Saint Martin where you can buy some fabulous empanadas.

This Cathedral is really spectacular. From the 15th century altar of gold to the sound track from the movie Mission playing inside you really feel the history. The altar to the Miracle of the Virgin gave me goose bumps and the optical illusion in marble floor was quite a bonus. One of the nicest Basilicas I've visited around the world and given its location up in the mountains truly amazing.

wonderful, but don't go if it's raining or has recently rained. A lot of curves, narrow road, but worth the trip.

This road from Salta to Cachi is something else... worth the trip but if you are driving, beware of high altitude...

Absolutely a must if you want to spend a day South-West of Salta. Climb here though a winding road, see a few condors and other fauna, continue to Cachi on the Ruta 40! Excellent tour.

Awe-inspiring tortured mountainscapes which take your breath away. You need a car and drive carefully. Much of the road is gravel... Estimate average 30km/hour.
