This historical site is a most see when in Cochabamba. They have hourly tours in different languages which makes it accesible. It has great history and beauty. The tour takes about an hour and goes through the palace of the "King of Tin". It is definently worth it.

Staff is too formal; long winded explanations lacking in appeal and charisma. Difficult to visit with small children. Staff needs to be more friendly, relaxed and personable. Otherwise, beautiful Palacio and grounds. Definitely worth the visit.

Bolivian Simon Patino was the "king of tin" and from about 1890 to 1940 was one of the 5 wealthiest men on the plante. He lived in Europe but built this "palace" as a retirement home--he never saw it but died on his way to Bolivia. The mansion is an over the top version of the various baroque and classical style palaces that Patino had seen in Europe. A little of Versaille, of the Vatican, Florence etc all done with foreign craftsmen and material. It is truly amazing and slightly in bad taste. It gives an important glimpse in the lives of tycoons of the era and is an important chapter in Bolivia's history.

The palace gardens are very nice for a walk on sunny days. In March 2014 there was an exhibition of paintings in the basement of the palace.

Unable to visit house because of disability but garden was lovely. Bouganvillea climbing huge palms and many other great plantings. Quiet paths surrounded by mountains

This house is well worth the visit for the mix of furniture and paintings especially in the ball room area and games room. The cost is 15 Bolivianos.

I enjoyed visiting the Palacio Portales during my stay in Cochabamba. It is an immaculate mansion type home built in the 1920's for the tin barron and his family but never lived in. Each part of the house represents a different part of Europe, Italy, France, Spain, etc. All materials were imported from Europe, a massive undertaking. The guides were all bilingual and easily switched between Spanish and English as we asked for the Spanish tour to practice our Spanish, but when we didn't understand something, they were happy to explain again in English. No picture taking allowed in the house. In the basement is a thought provoking contemporary art exhibit. Save time to sit and relax in the quiet, welcoming garden.

Builted in the 1940s, by order of the, Simon Patino who started as a mining apprentice. By 1924 he owned fifty percent of the national production and controlled the European refining of Bolivian tin.

This place is not only beautiful as a museum but also great as a cultural centre - they organise exhibitions and concerts (for free!), and have a superb information about cultural events in Cochabamba (I would say, its better to go there than to Tourist Information. Guides speak very good English as well.I just wish, It was possibile to take pictures inside the palace (without flash, of course:)

This place is really great! Placed in the more wealthy part of Cochabamba it has a beautifull setting. The house is amazing and all the stuff original since the house was never used. The guide spoke very fine english, and she answered our questions perfectly.A must-see in Cochabamba.
