The whole island is magic, but Orongo has it special "temper". It's a nice place to appreciate the nature and feel how small we are in this world. All the water inside the crater is used to supply the island, it's fascinating how one volcano could have create the island, destroyed part of the island and now start again to help the island to survive. One of my best pictures were taken in this place. Take the hint: panoramic picture was invented to be used in this crater.

A fascinating glimpse of the past on Rapa Nui! The volcano is adjacent, and there are excellent pictographs on the rocks.

This extinct volcano has an almost perfectly circular crater, blown out on one side by an ancient eruption,; the bottom is filled with plant-covered water, and there is a circular path around the top of the crater. The crater is approx. 1 1/2 kms across, and the hike around took me two hours(bad legs...). Perfect view of the two islands where the annual Birdmen race took place

We almost didnt stop here, but based on others reviews, were swayed and we are glad we did. The crater lake is awesome, and the village of the Orongo impressive (though it was disappointing to see how the Americans desecrated the site in the 1800's). Visitors center has interpretive information.

Loved this and all the legends around the bird men and how the first to find the first Sooty Tern egg of the year defined which family would rule for the next year. It was an extraordinary feat of strength and endurance
