A bit pricey, but if you never saw penguins in your life (Like me) - well worth it. a pleasant sail to the remote island, where you can enjoy many penguins and a few bird species all around. Note that you can't actually get near the penguins (You have a road you just walk on among them). Bring a good camera and a warm coat.

Weather was good so this probably colored the trip in a positive way. Short bus to the boat which then went out to the islands. Nice lagniappe of coffee after a windy time on the island. Great experience!

We took the ferry. Pleasant ride even in choppy seas. The island is fantastic! I loved, loved, loved seeing the penguins in their habitat. Still some youngish birds in February. I'd love to go earlier and see the chicks.

As others have said, be sure to book the ferry ahead of time, and dress warmly, even on a sunny day. If you have rain gear, consider taking it, both in case of rain and if you want to go topside during there trip. The Magellanic penguins are small and black and white, and live in burrows in the ground. In January when we were there the chicks had grown to full size, but had not shed their fuzz. If you stop without moving for a while they'll come right up to you; one of our group had one come up and bite his pant leg and act as if he wanted to tear off a strip! Really funny. As others have said, ti's a 5 hour round trip; an hour on the island is plenty. Well worth it- if you have a chance, don't miss it.

We spent three days in Punta Arenas and did this tour by ourselves, we had a great time on the island, you can see a lot of penguins and they are free to walk everywhere, so if you're lucky they can get very close to you!! You have to book at least one day in advance the ferry with Comapa (30,000 Chilean pesos) and the round trip takes 5 hours, 4 in the ferry and 1 on the island. Be sure to use a good jacket because the island is cold, windy and it can rain. Definitely worth it!!

Wonderful visit with the penguins. You are right there with them. I went on an overcast day but still enjoyed it immensely. The ferry ride was lovely as well.

It took 2 hours to get there on the ferry. Make damned sure you book it ahead of time. Ferry left at about 3 pm, I think. Isla Magdalena was a lot of fun...you will be thrilled to see all the penguins wondering around. Be aware that it will be cold and windy. It's a huge dirt hill, it seems, with not a blade of grass in sight. Seno Otway is an alternative...it is just the opposite; lots of grass and greenery, fewer penguins (but also a blast). Seno is a lot easier to get to, as well. Only takes an hour by car to get there, and an hour to get back.Isla Magdalena was worth the trip. Two hours to get there, on the ferry, 1 hour (or so) there, 2 hours to get back. Be sure to step out, while on the ferry, and see the Straight of Magellan underneath and around you; sometimes you can see the flipper of a whale, or groups of penguins in the water.

I'm giving this a "3" just because it's a fairly long amount of time (4 hours return) to spend on a boat for a 1 hour opportunity to see penguins. Having said that, the penguins at isla magdalena are very cool. we enjoyed seeing that and that was really our only opportunity to do so. all in all i think the trip is definitely worth while if this is your only chance to see penguins in their natural habitat. keep in mind the 4 hours you'll spend on the boat, however. if you tend toward sea sickness take some Dramamine or similar concoction or else you might be uncomfortable. i was glad i took some.

Cruising into this island a sunrise was a bonus with the sun just coming up at touching the shore in beautiful colors. The small community is mainly built up on the mountains with a few down by the shore. We learned later on the local people had built up on the mountain after the tsonami in 2010. They have made a nice recovery and there is no damage left. They are building some new places and others have been built and are very nice. There is a path along the shore area. A dive shop is located right there, and there is snorkeling right in front of it. They also have dive trips available. Continuing along the path you pass a nice little park with table, benches and restroom facilities with running water both inside and outside for washing your hands. At the end of the trail is a beautiful view of the water and the surrounding island landscape. A good place to relax and enjoy life. The hummingbirds are a main attraction here, but there were not down in town. We were advised they had moved up the mountain to a higher area for the season. Walking up the trail to this area you can turn off and go the the caves which were carved out of the mountain side to house exiles in early history. There are no restaurants per se, but the local people have used their own homes for serving snacks and drinks. Believe it or not, they even had a post office! Back into the center of the community, there is a nice little plaza with benches and several stores for shopping, only two were open when we were there. We also learned that there is air service to the island but it is on the other side. When you arrive they will pick you up by boat and bring you around to the area we were. There are also ranches on the other side. There was also one B&B there with a Tripadvisor sticker on the window. It appears one can do a lot of exploration here if you have the time, but you know cruise, they leave on time, bummer.
