40-some of the oldest mummies in the world, left where they were found and covered with a glass floor - there's a good, thorough audio commentary available in several languages. I felt a bit uneasy seeing them exposed to public view - and especially walking on the glass floor over them - but it's respectfully done and deserves support.

Great overview and display of mummies that are more than 3,000 years old. Good explanation of progression of mummification process.

In 2004, while digging in the area of the foundation of a new hotel, a burial ground was discovered containing mummified remains. It was decided that the mummies remain in situ and a museum was built around their graves and the hotel was sited elsewhere. The museum is very interesting and a bit creepy in that the graves are opened and covered by a glass floor so you can walk over them.

You will see a couple of mommies at the same spot where they were found under a colonial house. The conservation state was too bad to transfer the mommies to a museum, therefore they were covered with a glass roof in sitio. There is nothing else than this burial place to see at the museum.

We fly to Arica specially to see the mummies and we weren't disappointed. This mummies lie in the sand below the glass floors. Men, woman and children are on display here. They were complete with funeral bundles, death masks, and wigs. The Museo had information in English so you could read about the mummification process. Fascinating.
