We weren't sure what to expect from the zoo after reading other reviews here, so we were pleasantly surprised. It was quiet during the week but even as the first people there we felt very safe walking around (they've installed cameras and there are lots of staff around too). Some of the animals' cages have room for improvement but in general the animals seemed to be well looked after. They have a great selection of animals that are native to Paraguay and South America, plus impressive tigers and an elephant too. The staff are friendly and there were quite a few families with kids there. Entry was 7000 PYG per adult, which is less than £1 by the current exchange rate—bargain. Two things to be aware of: the zoo has a pretty haphazard layout and is bigger than it initially appears with poor signposting. Also, definitely take water and bug spray with you as there isn't anywhere inside to buy refreshments. Can't comment much on the Botanical Gardens as we were so hot and thirsty by the time we'd finished with the zoo that we left. They seem lovely, though more like a park than gardens as other reviewers have mentioned.

The zoo has started a reorganization and improvement project of all cages. They're getting bigger and greener! Also, from now on all the animals' main characteristics are explained on signs.

More like a big park in city. Lots of kids running around playing football. Very few plants marked with species name, not really a botanical garsen. Anyway, probably the most and only peaceful place in Asuncion city.

The park is a very nice place to come and walk around. I love the old summer residence of president Lopez, the bird life, the trees and flours...But this is also a zoo with badly treated animals in small dirty cages fed with whatever leftovers the zoo has. In the zoo, there is also a museum with animals stuffed so amateurish, that you cannot help feeling sorry for the hardly recognizable animals.4 star park1 star zoo

The botanical garden and zoo is a very large park with many kilometres of trails, a natural history museum, a forest reserve, camping and a few other places to see including something called Casa Alta that was closed for renovations when I was there. The entire place seems well maintained with workers actively improving the zoo and gardens. There is plenty of shade from the large trees in the area and places to sit and enjoy the views. All of the areas were clean, the garbage bins were emptied, and the grass was cut.Despite what other reviews have indicated, the area was quite safe with security at the gates and on the grounds, workers were around, there were a few people selling water and crafts, and the few visitors who were there were enjoying their time just as I was.The Natural History Museum is a collection of fauna from Paraguay and some from other countries. One of the employees at the museum, Carmen, gave me a personal tour of the museum sharing her knowledge of the animals shown in the displays. As far as the zoo is concerned, there are some people who will be horrified by caged animals at any zoo, but in this one, I observed that the enclosures were well-maintained, the animals looked very healthy and unstressed, there was plenty of habitat for most of the animals, there was natural shade from trees and foliage (even to the point where some of it impeded the view in favor of the needs of the animals), and the signs all encouraged people to not bother or feed any animals and to stay away from the fences. As far as zoos go, this was one of the more enjoyable ones and seemed to be very good for the animals. If you enjoy nature and want to get out of the bustle of the city for a few hours with little expense, I would highly recommend this area. There was plenty of natural flora and fauna to see, including the wonderful ants who were parading their bounty along many trails in some areas. If you don't like ants, just look around for a spot that doesn't have any. If you are lucky, you might spot a shy lizard running behind a tree as I did.The bus from the city center was Gs. 2000 each direction, the botanical gardens are free if you walk in, and the zoo was Gs. 7000. The entire afternoon, therefore, was about US$3.

Compared to the Botanical Gardens say in Rio, this more like a very large city park that happens to have a small zoo, an out-dated natural history museum (very small), and a few pleasant flower gardens. My husband and I enjoyed a stroll here with our daughter who we had not seen in several months. It was a wonderful place to walk hand-in-hand and enjoy each other's company, and I imagine it's a great place to get away from the hussle and bussle of the city, but it's not what I would consider a tourist destination. If a relaxing walk is what you need, this is a good place. Don't forget insect repellent. As soon as you leave the main path, you will need it! A good place to buy local crafts including jewelry and cloth bags. Taxis are allowed to pass through the gate and drop you off near the museum or the zoo. Our driver volunteered to wait and pick us up in two hours, and he showed up as promised to whisk us away to our next stop.

Went to the museum at the botanical gardens and saw the whale eye. This is mentioned in the book At The TOmb of the Inflatable Pink Pig by John Gimlette

We took a bus here, and It was a great escape from the city. We did not have high expectations for the zoo, but it turned out to be a cute place. It was the first time we saw a hippo being active on land.
