Some time ago it was consider to hold the best collection of Contemporary Art in Latin America. In recent times famous for the disappearance of Matisse' s Dama de Rojo now found and return( not certaint yet when is going tobe shown again despite the big fanfarria local authorities made) Worth a paced mid-morning visit to awe with Picasso's Suite Vollard Collection, Botero's massive sculptures and paintings as well as Miro's, Leger's and talented local artists ( Diez,Soto, etc)

If you enjoy the art this is your place, interesting collection, not a crow place, it is close to Parque Central and Teatro Teresa Carreno Theater, great museum option in Caracas.

A very nice and interesting collection, free entrance, comfortable spaces and no crowds! I was practically alone in the museum when I visited, so I could really take my time and enjoy the pieces! Caracas does not offer as many attractions as some other Latin-American capitals, but this museum should not be missed if you pay a visit to this city.

This museum is world-class. I just noted earlier reviews concerned with the dumbing down of people through the removal of publicly accessible art (and other means). And while I agree entirely that this is the trend in Venezuela, and that this is completely and totally apparent on the ground, this museum does remain as a leader in terms of its collection still on display. Visit while you still can!! The architecture is also part of the attraction. While as far as I know the concrete jungle of the Parque Central precedes Chavez's megalomania, regardless, it is worth seeing from below. Horrific. But, then, appropriate that the stellar museum of Modern Art is located within and underneath some of the worst modern architecture ever.

Truthfully, there is not a wide variety of sites to see in Caracas. If you are spending a few days and want to see a bit of art or relish some time spent in air conditioning, this is a good choice. The Picasso pieces alone are worth the visit - his sketches are excellent.

The Picasso exhibit was nothing short of spectacular. It was also a great place to escape the demonstrations that were going on near the capitol building a mile or so away.

It used to be excellent, but the socialist government thinks art is a capitalistic illness, I have heard many works have been removed

As other reviewers have noted, the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo has a fine collection of modern art. The museum is all the more rewarding because the quality of its collection is rare in Latin America, and its ambience is a welcome relief from its shabby neighborhood and the dangerous city of Caracas. Admission is free. However the museum itself--the building, staff and facilities--is somewhat pathetic compared with good museums elsewhere. Some of the exhibition space was dirty and needing repair, galleries that were apparently open had ropes across the entrance, and there were few helpful signs identifying galleries, styles or movements. The explanatory signs accompanying each artwork were helpfully placed but offered no information beyond title and artist. No brochures or printed museum guides were available anywhere in the museum, even after asking at the front desk. A printed guide would have been helpful since the arrangement of the artworks seemed somewhat random. The most glaring problems had to do with the building itself and its maintenance. On the rainy day when we visited, water was dripping from the ceiling and there were puddles in different places on the floor. These wet rooms contained no exhibits but were not cordoned off either. The bathrooms were unbelievably bad, like a roadside stop far from civilization. There was no water, soap or towels. And the toilets did not flush, hadn't been flushed for some time. When we asked about using the bathroom, the guards were not helpful, maybe to discourage us from seeing their condition. There were quite a few guards/employees relaxing in the museum but their responsibilities apparently did not include assisting visitors or taking care of problems in the building. In fairness, it's possible that we happened to visit on a particularly bad day. It's also likely that this museum, like most others, is suffering from serious budget problems that prevent it from operating better. However, as a visitor, the experience of being surprised by the inadequacy of facilities in Venezuela is not new. We have lived and traveled in Venezuela for over two years and during that time Venezuelans we have met on a personal basis have been charming and enjoyable people. However the work ethic and conscientiousness that many Venezuelans bring to their jobs, as in the museum, is not the highest. So you see a lot of incomplete projects along with sloppy work. Combined with the ongoing economic and political turmoil and uncertainty, this all makes for a society that may have great potential but currently presents many unattractive features. We hope improvement is possible.

When looking for some cultural experiences in Caracas, there are a number of art and historical museums to visit around town, but none like this! This museum not only boasts a wide selection of Picasso sketches and art pieces, but notable pieces from contemporary artists around the world. I even noted a wall dedicated to an artist from my hometown in New Jersey! :) Not to mention, with the help of an excellent art director who is more than helpful, speaks 3 languages, loves to talk about art, and is always around to guide you through exhibitions, the museum has a wide variety of ever-changing displays of art from all over Venezuela; highlighting not only significant creative pieces, but also those pieces that document the Venezuelan experience through art. Having visited Venezuela 3 times, I have made an effort to visit this museum each time. The exhibitions are beautiful and wonderful, and they also have a wide variety of children's programs to work with and inspire young artists throughout the Caracas area.
