need I say more...? That's pretty awesome... The church is really nice too... but historically it's pretty impressive.

Very old church right in the heart of the historic district. It's pretty big, kind of plain on the outside, but very nice inside, lot's of history. Worth visiting for sure.

The building is definitely worth a quick visit since it's so close to other places of interest. A quick tour if the insides is jut enough.

Just go to look for it when you near. You can enter and theres things to look but nothing that would give you a reason to stay longer.

Cathedral is nothing special. You can enter there but only if you are in the way. Located about 10 minutes walk from the sea.

it may be the oldest town in Colombia, but, to be honest, its pretty dull, and is not a patch on Cartagena. if you look at reviews of the attractions...apart from this, pretty underwhelming church, they are all beaches or tayrona national park. that is because santa marta is not really big on attractions...in fact it is not really attractive at all...and if you have just come here from Cartagena, you will probably be wondering why you bothered. I looked at staying here, and am so glad that I chose to stay in taganga instead....ok, it doesn't have this church, the oldest in south America...but you can easily get a taxi for around $3US..just spend the day here, see the church, do a bit of shopping, and then go back to somewhere nicer, and closer to tayrona, with those fantastic beaches. I think you might find that this is not a review of the church, whats to say?...but there is no where else to review santa marta as a town, even that should ring alarm bells.on the other hand...I did buy those amazing, brightly coloured Colombian bags on a street near this church for half the price I had seen them anywhere else, and from a woman who was making them with the wool attatched to her feet. so there are some good things about santa marta. that and it has a cambio....there is not one in taganga.

A nice church with more history than one would expect. Here you will find the original resting place for Simon Bolivar who died at a farm nearby. His remains were moved to Caracas 12 years after his death and that's where he remains. In the church are a number of monuments to Bolivar as well as the grand alters one would, expect from an old Latin American cathedral. The original church that was on the site during Bolivars time still stands inside with the more grand and typical cathedral more of an add-on to the original chapel sized church.

The Cathedral was very nice. While it is not as grand as some in South America and else it points towards what was once Santa Marta when the Spainairds arrived. It is centerally located and certainly worth a visit. Make sure to not confuse it with the church in Plaza san francisco.
