We came from the US and stayed with Some friends in the next city over named Olon (which you must check out if your in Montinita) we took a $1.50 can ride to Montinita-This eclectic ocean town has the vibe of gnarly hippies & young travelers from around South America & the world-dominated by street crafts, restaurants & surfers enjoying perfect weather on the beach by day turning into a huge party at nite til 3am! It's not x-rated but certainly more appropriate for adults-watch your belongings & shop wisely as everything is negotiable - a fun place to spend day & nite -**travel advisory**As a senior contributor I believe it's my responsibility to give this advisory! Although Ecuador is a naturally beautiful country it is a 3rd world developing country- poverty is pervasive and cleanliness not close to standards that you may expect in developed Countries - you must plan accordingly in all regards

We went off for half a day from Salinas to this beach area on the Pacific coast of Ecuador, and loved it! It was an easy trip and all of $3.50 in total by public transport. The town is a cute Disneyland-like hippie surf haven, with great restos and lots of craft shops. We had a great local lunch of soup, and ceviche with rice for $2.50. I broke down and ordered a brownie with ice cream at another resto with fabulous expresso coffee afterwards. The chairs and showers are available for a price on the beach. What's most wonderful, was the warm water and breaking surf.

Great beach! The surf was perfect and the sand was well groomed. Plenty of cheap hostels and happening bars to see right on the beach. Sweet spot to catch some rays and surf!

I've been traveling to Montañita since 1999 and this is the first time I have passed the bridge and see a tire several fishes dying in black waters. This is no longer the paradise we used to have but a sewer.

A touristic trendy town, with good and bad things to see, great for night entertaining, dinner, drinks, not so much for families, but still very different.

It's great for strong swimmers, surfers and sun worshipers, but we don't fit into that category. We like to play in gentle waves.

Wonderful beach, 3.3 miles of clean sand and waves braking on a world class surfing beach......Its a combination of the beaches and surf of Hawaii (like Hapuna State Beach), Laguna Beach, Ca ( ocean town with atmosphere) and New Orleans ( Party till you can party no more)..... At 2AM, the beach is more populated than the bars.... Cocktail Alley is not to be missed

What a place to relive my youth, the building types and atmosphere take me back to a time of boards, broads and booze, all in that order. Many deals can be made with street vendors selling everything from hammocks to fancy gem stones ( but caviot emptor ). Met a few rasta's selling real opals and amber, bought a bobble or two. It was spring break so the chaica's were everywhere, one must have mirror sun glasses if one is with one's wife. We had a great time and left with many memories.

I liked the colorful street vendors carts and local artisans, however ithere was trash in the streets and a little too much construction going on.

Even in "winter" with very cool and misty days there were people on the beach sitting under umbrellas watching the surf. Couldn't figure it out except that they had come from wherever and were going to do it because they were there. Not a great beach but some good surf, of course.
