The drive from New Norfolk commences by following the banks of the beautiful Derwent River. Along the way are a number of small towns where you can break your journey on the way home for coffee or a snack. Tip: have a look at Maydena for coffee-the Maydena Adventure HubAs far as the end of the line goes; the Gordon Dam wall is a great sight. Make sure you take the time to descend the stairs (equivalent to 14 stories) to the dam wall. There are some very good photo ops as you walk along the top of the wall. Well worth the time, not to mention the exercise! A recommended trip. Tip: make sure you take a rain coat or umbrella as the weather changes at the drop of a hat.

Came here as a tip from a guy we met on the plane. Let me just say, it was worth the 3 hour detour. It's so hard to show in pictures the feeling you get when you first glimpse the drop from the dam wall, you've really got to see it for yourself. OK it may not be Hoover Dam, but there's nothing like it in Brisbane.Don't leave without taking the walk along the dam wall. If you're afraid of heights, grit your teeth (don't look down, the stairs are those steel mesh ones that you can see right through) and slowly walk yourself across, it's truly an experience.

We drove up to the Gordon Dam and enjoyed driving through the surrounding area. Strathgordon is as far as you can go on the road and ends at the dam. You see Lake Pedder on the way which was formed by construction of the dam. You also drive through the Sentinal Range which is very wild and open. Be sure to stop and walk the Creepy Crawly Nature Trail on the way up past Mt. Field Park. It is full of tanglewood bushes and is a very interesting walk about 20 minutes. Lake Pedder was very low when we were there and you could see a lot of dead wood at the bottom. There is a stair way from the top of the road down to the dam about 100 stairs, easy going down but not so easy on the way up. But it is well worth the climb.

The Strathgordon area is a beautiful part of Tasmania. We camped at Land of the Giants camp ground at My Field and spent 2 of our days exploring the region. The Gordon Dam was amazing, you must walk down the stairs and along the too of the dam wall......the views are amazing.Lots of great walks in the area both shirt and multiple days. If out this way make sure you also go out to Edgar Dam and to the end of the road to Red Knoll Lookout. You get a 360degree view of out lakes, mountain peaks and scenery.A great 2 days will definitely go out that way again.
