I did the Fullers tour on Rangitoto. Very well organized and the visit was interesting as this is a volcanic island that was formed about 500 years ago from a volcanic explosion. Very recent for such a phenomenon. it was interesting to see the volcanic fields, how the lava flowed to the ocean and the view from the top of the island whih is accessed through a well maintained boardwalk was phenomenal.

Fullers and 360 offer ferry service here from Viaduct harbor. There are 2 different approaches to tackle Rangitoto. Take the 2 1/2 hour Harbor Cruise and set foot on Rangitoto for 10 min and take some great photos. Or plan on spending the day there hiking to the top and back ( approx. 350 meters elevation above the sea ). Reminder, no shade, fully exposed (the Volcano, not you ), or opt for the 4 wheel drive tour. Walked it, Checkmark # 14 !

This island is reachable by ferry from wharf 2 on the Auckland waterfront. If you select the "tour", you will board a motorized tram for a drive around this volcanic island, plus an opportunity to hike to the summit on the boardwalk. The views are wonderful and the volcanic surface of the ground truly amazing. Well worth the visit. Be sure to confirm the ferry time for departing the island on your return to Auckland.

Its wild and natural with minimal facilities but wonderful views of the Haurali Gulf from the top of the volcanic crater. Fascinating lava tunnels to explore, carefully !
