As well as the usual maps and (good) advice about what to do, the visitor centre also had a museum about the local animals, volcanos and the history of skiing in the area.

A sort of chart showing all the famous volcanoes. Mount St Helens, tiny as was Krakatoa, even Vesuvius. Curved lines showing the height of each volcano. Where is the line for the huge Taupo blast??? Up over the ceiling!!!

The scenery is spectacular, and where else cane get this close to an active volcano? The climb up was far less tough than we were expecting, but it was the descent that was a killer. The continual braking action against the slope, and lots of uneven steps resulted in my quads really feeling it! Don't let that put you off, though. What they don't really tell you about is the exposure to heights and near-sheer drops. In the case of the col between the volcanoes, you climb up and over a cinder cone. The ash doesn't provide much traction (think walking up sand dunes), and the ground drops away sharply on both sides. We found it seriously scary, but as the only way home was the bus at the car park at the far end, we just had to go through with it. But yes, it was worth it. Be warned that about three quarters of the way though the walk is a traffic light (yes, I do mean a traffic light!). If its red, it means there is danger from the volcano (not just eruption, but a greater risk from lahars). In that case, you have to turn around, and walk another 9 or so miles back rather than the three or so to the end.You don't have to be super fit - neither of us are spring chickens, but we made it!

This was the first ski field I learnt for skiing. I have attached to it emotionally. The staff is friendly and helpful. For first timer, this visitor centre provides with a lot of information for what to do.
