We took the Caterpillar Garden Tour, which is a pleasant and easy way to see the gardens. The tour was one hour and the time seemed to go very quickly. There is a cost for the Caterpillar Tour but it saves walking around the gardens. Our driver pointed out all the interesting plants in the gardens and he was able to answer all questions. He stopped the vehicle and we were given 15 minutes to see the begonia and cactus houses. The gardens are 21 hectares and are near the Avon River. The Caterpillar tour is a great way to see all the gardens.

Loved this place! Nicely shaded by the trees alongside the river and pleasant water garden and rose garden. Also, a brass band were playing when we were there. Could have spent a lot longer.

Take the time to walk to the far end of the Gardens to see the 'Rose Garden'. It is a simply beautiful large garden with hundreds of roses. Just about every colour and variety you could ask for. I suspect some of them may be older styles, but they are lovingly cared for. Wonderful photo opportunities for some macro shots in the peace and quite. The Mature trees are also just amazing! The gift shop is interesting & the cafe excellent. A great museum is just at the entrance gate and is also free! Perhaps the best place to visit in Christchurch. You can easily walk to it from the Bus station & the city. (Not that there is much city left)
