I took a group I was travelling with to this attraction (it is the 8th visit for me) and compared to previous visits it appeared rushed and it felt like being the last trip of the day there was an urgency to "just go through the motions" with many of the finer details being omitted ar rushed it lacked the polish and professionalism of previous visits (disappointing for me but 1st time visitors wouldn't know) - it could have been so much better than it was

awesome, exhilarating darkness, showing the glow worms in their natural habitat.very interesting for a day trip.if you are in a wheel chair the access is difficult, they endeavour to help everyone, but you have to get in and out of a small boat in the caves.i would say its quite difficult to do that in a wheelchair

A real experience with a boat ride to get to the caves. Once inside you are split into small groups and after a short presentation which is very interesting and user friendly you enter the caves to be met by a fantastic sight of the glow worms. There is also a boat ride into a cavern. Really cool tour.

Our little B&B suggesting this activity for the afternoon. For $75 per person (NZD), you meet down at the pier (town center) and board a boat for a 30 min ride out to the caves. Once there, you are herded into a room for a short talk about the glow worms. Then a tiny walk leads to a boat ride (on rails) that goes through the caves in the dark. Each boat holds about 12 or so and is lead by a guide. After the trip inside the caves, then a short wait in the informative visitors room and then back on the boat across Lake TeAnau. All in all, about 2 hrs and 15 minutes. A little bit expensive, but definitely worthwhile. (I haven't seen the glow worms in the North Island, but some say they are better there).

this is completely magical - cannot praise it enough. A boat-trip along the Te Anu Lake arrives at a well-made chalet, where videos and information prepare visitors for what they will see. Then a guide takes a small group along a walkway through the caves, over the rushing waters that pour through caverns, until at the end of this, when the caves are darker and further from the light, there is a small boat in which you sit. the guide gently steers this boat through the velvet darkness, and as your eyes adjust you see tiny, vivid blue points of light - the glow-worms - in colonies. Slowly manoeuvring through several small caves, the effect is completely magical, and very beautiful indeed.

Heavy rain on the night before meant that the glowworm caves were flooded and trips had to be cancelled. Unfortunately, I had to postpone my booked trip to the next morning. After the ferry brought us to the island, the staff found the caves partially flooded and decided that it was safe to bring us 50m (out of 250m) into the cave so that we could still see some glow worms. Despite getting less than what I paid for, I enjoyed every moment of the trip! So much so that it didn't occur to me that I could have asked for some sort of refund.. But guess what? I checked my bank account after my trip and found out that and they gave me a FULL refund! Kudos to Real Journeys for their exemplary professionalism! I would definitely return to the Te Anau glowworm caves for a complete experience with Real Journeys.

Amazing to see. Even the short walk through the cave before reaching the little boat was an eye opener. There are heaps of sandflies before entering the cave so spray well before you leave. Do yourself a favor.... don't get on the little cave boat with babies/toddlers. I read this same advise on Tripadvisor before my tour and i can tell you that advise was so helpful. The boat infront of us had a 1 year old that screamed the whole way. If i was on that boat i would of wanted my money back. The poor unfortunates on that particular boat were so angry. For those of thinking about taking their babies.... don't do it. It is pitch black & they will probably scream their heads off. Just my opinion.

This trip commences with a pleasant short cruise across beautiful Lake Te Anau. The trip into the caves to see glow worms was fascinating and our guide was knowledgable and fun. The short boat trip in total darkness was the highlight, and very safely organised. Overall definitely a well organised trip and great value for money. Staff service was top notch
