It's a bit of a drive from the Motueka area (took us a little over 2 hours each way) but absolutely worth it. The NZ Frenzy Guide lists this as the #1 beach in New Zealand (I think) and I couldn't agree more. It's beautiful, sullen, windswept and stunning. A far different kind of beach from those in the Abel Tasman area. We even went body surfing down at the south end though the locals tell me that it's not really recommended due to strong rip tides in the area. I grew up on a pretty rough stretch of coast, so take my experience in the water for what it is and evaluate conditions according to your own ability.

This was our second visit to Wharariki Beach Walking Track. We stayed overnight 20 minutes away and set off for the Beach at 6am in the darkness. Parked our car at the start of the walk and headed for the beach in the dark. We watched the sun come up as we walked along the track heading directly for the beach. What a lovely time of day to be out. First we headed to the rock pools that were filled with baby seals. Spent a short while watching the carefree seal young at play then headed along the beach parallel to the sea. Enjoyed the numerous sea caves and the beautiful arches. As we approached the extensive rocky formations at the far end of the beach we continued until we identified the path that we needed to use when the tide would force us to leave the beach. Once we found the orange triangle above the beach we were happy to settle down and explore the many treasures and formations on the very top end of the beach. In all we spent 5 hours exploring. A photographers paradise! Low tide was at 6.00am and high tide was at 1.00pm. In fact it was a King tide the day we were there. Watching the gentle advance of the tide over the morning was fascinating. By 11.00 we were climbing up the rocks leading off the beach. We spent another 10 minutes watching the tide cover the golden sand before we turned and made our way away from the beach and back to the farmland walking track. The track was not that well marked at this stage but after following what must have been an animal track, we re joined the driving track and made our way back to our car. In our time there on the beach we saw only three other explorers. We had snacks to keep us comfortable and water to drink and in all we had a wonderful morning. On the farm walk back we passed at least 15 people heading for the beach but I suspect that because the tide was so high that they were going to miss the best parts of Wharariki Beach. My advice is to check the tides before you plan your trip and if you can't stay as long as we did, make sure you are there during the 2 hours either side of low tide. You will be pleased that you took the time to get the right tide for your visit.

We hiked this twice. Once during the day and once by flashlight after dark. This is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever visited. Go at lower tide if you can to see the seal pool. We were on horseback for our visit during low tide, so we were unable to see the seals close up. Be sure to stop for a rest in the shady grotto which doubles as a coffee stop at the end of the hike.

Wharariki beach was an unexpected jaw- dropping stunning beach! my husband and i mountain biked from Cape farewell campground at dusk and found ourselves with the beach all to ourselves. to make it even better we chanced upon two baby seals playing in one of the tidal pools-just amazing!Best at low tide.

Beautiful any time, low tide allows greatest access to the many sea caves and tunnels. Bring water shoes and plenty of time. The walk in over pasture and dunes is worth going, but the time on the beach sets this apart. You arrive at the north end, but get all the way south--it gets better and better.

Arrived here a little after 9am. There was one other car in the car park. It's a short walk across the farm and over the dunes to Warariki Beach. When I got to the beach there were 2 other people. By the time I left about 20. On the road out there was a constant stream of cars and campervans inbound. Very glad I visited such a beautiful spot, but definitely arrive early and be the crowds.

Well worth a visit especially at low tide when you can walk to the south end and return back to the car park via an alternative route over farmland. Allow at least one and half hours to fully explore the beach area and the round circuit return.

We heard about this beach from a friend of our daughter. It was well worth the trip through the lovely Golden Bay area at the North top of South Island and the short drive over an unsealed road. The walk over the hill through farmland was beautiful. The beach at the end of the track was everything that others have described with rock arches, large sand dunes and in particular seals !One of our favourite New Zealand beaches!

An easy hike across rolling farmland brings you to the dunes and then down to the beach. This beach was stunning with hardly anyone around. Stayed for quite a long time...amazing to see how quickly the tide changes. Saw lots of seals. Still dream about this beach....just stunning.

A short easy walk over farmland and beach to "another world". A magical place with beautiful vistas. Teenagers loved it as much as the adults so a great family outing. Caves and watching seals play were highlights.
