This is a local museum with many articles donated by local people. It is not high tech! I enjoyed reading about the lives of the local fisherman. The museum is in the process of moving to a new building so all the displays weren't there. Staff member was very enthusiastically involved with a child at the lobster hatchery.

We (kids age 9 and 13 and parents) visited the museum and the adjacent lobster hatchery. The museum was solidly good and the staff were exceptionally helpful. (My 9 year old was very excited to identify blue whale baleen that he'd learned about in school.) The real highlight for the whole family, however, was the lobster hatchery. The fisheries lab tech that was running things was incredibly knowledgeable, well-spoken, and a natural teacher. No question was too challenging or too simple. We saw live lobsters from the stage of producing eggs (berried, I believe) to the being ready to release into the wild. We saw the 4.5 pound rare (1 in 2 million) blue lobster and the even rarer (1 in 30 million) orange lobster. We've been eating a lot of lobster on this vacation and had a chance to meet up with a lobster fisherman unloading his catch. The visit to the hatchery was an excellent opportunity to dig deeper into the topic. A real highlight of our visit to Pictou.

The summer students working at all three locations of the fisheries museum are incredibly knowledgeable. They are genuinely excited to share what they know about the museums where they work, and no matter what you ask they are sure to have an answer for your question. If they're unsure, they make every effort to find out for you. It will be great to have the locations all together on the waterfront next year. Don't miss out on the lighthouse tucked in behind the construction on the waterfront, it really is a must-see!

We all enjoyed learning about the local lobster and fishing history. The artifacts around the museum were amazing, we never made it to the lobster hatchery as it was closed.

We began by following the red lobsters on the pavement - so far so good. The walk is about 300 yards, the entrance is on the front of the building - opposite side to notice and where lobsters finish. Was perhaps expecting a little more, it was good but definitely aimed at children rather than adults and this was not really explained to us at the start. The guide booklet we were given to show us round was not appropriate for an adult level museum, with glittery stickers on the cards and instructions to imagine what things would be like .... Fine for kids. But the second part, the hatchery, was really confusing - we were told it was all part of the same museum but not given any ticket to show we had paid. It appeared open but the staff were showing people around inside which we could see though the window but they had door locked and nobody told us what was happening, to wait or that it was tour by guide only. So we stood there for ages trying to catch someone's attention to ask but even when they appeared to have seen us nobody came out to help. After some ten minutes we walked on and left the quayside completely, so missing out on the other boat display, the experience had just made us feel unwanted and confused. It would have been interesting to see the blue lobster others have raved about in the reviews. We were disappointed on this occasion. (18 July)

It is nice to bring the children to see a baby lobster, a blue lobster and everything about them.The fisherman bring them the lobsters that has eggs, and they will hatch them and release the lobsters back to the ocean. You can adopt a lobster through this program.

The lobster hatchery is in a new building on the quayside. A small place but well worth a visit. The people working there certainly seem to know everything about lobsters! I was well informed and enjoyed this immensely. Go see a orange and blue lobster, rare examples of pigmentation change. Well worth the money. It is a very small building crammed with tanks etc. Very small groups of one or two OK. Sorry, not one for the disabled.The Fisheries museum is currently housed in the old Train Station at the end of the quay. I believe this will move to new premises on the quay shortly. I was the only visitor, but had an excellent tour, shown round by a local lady who certainly knew her stuff. Very enjoyable.

This is a very interesting. The ladies in the Museum were very knowledgeable about the fishing industry and local information. The Lobster Hatchery was an eye opener about the life cycle of the Lobster. Also, don't miss the BLUE LOBSTER.

This is a small but worthwhile place to stop in you are at all interested in lobstering or fishing in the Nova Scotia area. There are actually two buildings and they are both about 10 minutes from the pictou/caribou ferry. The first building is simply a hatchery. You will see lobsters that are just a couple of days old up to lobsters that are teenagers. The second building is in an old depot and we had to look at bit harder for it. This is quite an interesting little museum, as well as nursery for egg bearing female lobsters. A fisherman has just brought in a 15 pound lobster that was quite a hunk. The young woman that greeted us walked us through the museum, pointing out things of interest. She was very knowledgable and made the visit even more enjoyable. I would say just go because you will never have another opportunity to see something like this!

The morning we were there a school trip arrived with children about age 7. It was fun seeing the guide explain everything to them and seeing it through their eyes. Glad we went.
