We found the market tucked down the dead end street near the ferry dock in Isabel. Went in and at the time, they only had fresh lobster. We grabbed a few but then were told that the next boat would be in in about an hour and there would be fresh fish. So we went back and they had red snapper and grouper. Bought both and the fish and lobster were fresh and delicious. Definitely stay in one night and go to this market for the fresh catch of the day.

We got there late in the day. We were able to buy two large lobsters and a large red snapper. They cleaned and de-scaled the fish and packed the lobster for us. We cooked the lobster the first night and the snapper two nights later. The price was $82 for all. The men at the market were very friendly and helpful.

Not terribly friendly, but lobster was $8/pound (live) and fresh grouper was $5/pound. It took a while to get the guy's attention, he was talking to a friend, but once he told us the prices, it only took another bit to get him to sell us something. But, it is fresh and the only place in town.

As a resident of Vieques, I am often at the fish market. The owners, Eric and Guelymar, are on site and very helpful. I find that around 11am is a good time to go. Lobsters and conch are plentiful as is fish. The triggerfish is great. Even if you have to buy frozen instead of fresh, it has only been frozen for a day or two. Remember that every day is not a fishing day - it is very weather dependent.

My husband and I read the previous review about the fish market and knew we wanted to try to find it. It was easy to find, but we were told there was nothing being offered the first time we went there (which I found odd as you couldn't really buy seafood anywhere else on the island that I could tell). We don't speak much Spanish, but I had a feeling they sell most of their stock directly to restaurants. I could not be deterred, so we went back again around noon the next day. We just so happened to be there when a boat was off-loading a huge crate of lobsters. So, I took out my cash and asked how much they were. Our hostess at our house told us to expect $8/pound, and that's what they quoted, too. They did quickly whisk the rest of the lobsters away once we picked out our 4-pounder. They were all very kind in the transaction... just make sure you're firm and know what you want. It doesn't hurt to bring a local with you, either! There were also freezers with previous days' catches in them, too, but we only had lobster on the mind.

Reguardless of the rumors, we found the fresh fish market to open at noon during the week.. Not at 8 AM as some of the locals told us. Note... it is very hidden ... to the right of the ferry terminal, at the back of the alley that runs along the bay. You will see small boats and pelicans. Park where you can, or send someone to shop. Do not pull in the alley. Too hard to back out of. It is worth all the trouble. Lots of freshly caught fish, lobsters, conch... whatever the sea gave up that day. If they do not have what you want fresh, yesterday's catch is in the freezers. This is the ONLY place we found to get fish on the island other than in a restaurant. And you know you can cook it better than they do! It is hard to find... but so worth it!
