Lake Onuma was frozen when we visited in winter. It was snowing the entire time we were there and it was cold but the white all around was a beautiful sight. This is one of those places which I think would be beautiful all year round, in all four seasons. We enjoyed the scenery on the drive into Onuma Koen, especially the view of Mount Komagatake and its snowy peak. Lots of photography enthusiasts camping their tripods along the lake so I reckon this is a good place for scenery photography!

We were on our way from lake toya to hakadate when we pass by this lake. Its a beautiful place to enjoy the scenery and for photo taking. Some of the sections are totally frozen when we visited in early dec.

Well, if you already planned to go to this beautiful lake from Hakodate. Please check with the Hakodate tourist Info counter (inside Hakodate JR Train station office) for any "combo pass". During my time (Late October), JR did offer a combo pass, title "Cycling One Day Pass" to Onuma Lake from Hakodate (Yen 1500 only). With this pass, you can have a-retur- travel by JR train to Onuma Lake from Hakodate within one day, and also one day "bicycle rental service". ALL-IN-ONE (Yen 1500!!!).

This is a great place to visit and spend time when in Hakodate. It's about 25 mins out from Hakodate train station. But a great relaxing and picturesque spot.

100+ small islands, a lot connected by bridges make for a good nature hike. It is easily accessible from the train station. A local musician arranged a new song from an old poem and it was sung in classical voice circa 2007 in the annual New Year’s Red & White song show and it became one of the biggest hit of that year. That song is “Sen No Kaze Ni Natte” (I have become a thousand winds). A monument is placed in this park. Interesting, delicious looking ice cream is sold there. Several brands of beers were available not commonly seen elsewhere.
