Located in a mountainside “strip mall” along the way to Lake Toya onsens. The bear zoo, part of our tour package, is a small attraction with lots of bears – too many in confined quarters. The bears are trained to raise their paws and the tourists throw them cookies purchased for that purpose. It doesn’t seem like a good deal for the bears. Go there if you must see live Hokkaido bears otherwise you won’t miss much by skipping this attraction. The rest of the “mall” has enough attractions to make a visit to this area worthwhile.

This is the most horrible place and if it were in the West it would be shut down. Rescued bears now living a life of hell crowded into concrete enclosures while we tourists throw them some biscuits. Most disturbing was the glass box prominently positioned as you walk in. Trapped inside were two baby bear cubs with nothing - repeat Nothing - no water, no food, no greenery, no Nothing. They had resorted to running from one side of the box to the other. What life of "Rescue" is that? Astonished that this is allowed in Japan!

Feed them, they look forward to that, they are simply adorable, dont forget to visit they grown up adults, they are also cute and when they look into your eyes at small distance, is overwhelming, scary, sad, all emotions flow, because if you love animals, you want them free and you see them as close while feeding them nuts, they are greatful.

A trail which led us to a crater and through various ruins left by volcanic activities including an abandoned highway, a dislocated bridge, a shattered apartment block, mud-filled public bath house, crumpled chocolate factory and a kindergarten destroyed by flying eruption rocks, now being a heaven for crows in the area. It was an eye-opening experience for us being in close proximity to earthquake and volcanic destruction.

あまり期待していなかったのですが、思ったより楽しかったです。餌をあげると、熊がわらわらと寄ってきます。1歳の息子は、まだよく分からなかったみたいて、きょとんとしていましたが、もう少し大きな子ならもっと楽しいかも。

有珠山ロープウェイ展望のあと近くにあり立ち寄りました。敷地内はそんなに広くなく間近で沢山の熊たちに会える場所です。年齢別に熊たちがわかれており幼稚園の子熊たちにも会うことが出来ました。子熊たちの戯れはほんとに愛くるしく可愛いです。自販機に熊用のクッキーが100円で売っておりそのクッキー欲しさに熊たちが手を叩いたりとアピールする姿は本来の熊の怖さを払拭させられます。意外にもこのクッキーやりが時間を忘れてしまうぐらい楽しかったです。また機会があったら行きたいです。

寒い時期だったこともあり、お昼寝中の子もいました。エサを１００円で購入でき、自由にエサやりができます。手を合わせて催促する姿が、とてもかわいかったです。

マッキマキ

入場した時には、あまり広くない敷地ですぐに見終わってしまいそうですが入場券売場で売っていたリンゴやクッキーを熊さんたちにあげるのが、とっても楽しい。食べ物を見せると、ちょうだいちょうだいみたいなしぐさをしてきます。投げた食べ物を上手に口や手でキャッチできる子もいれば落として転がったリンゴを他の子に食べられちゃったり。そんな姿を見ていたら、ついついリンゴを買い足してしまいました。

トートン

洞爺湖近くにある熊牧場です。空き時間があったのでよってみました。熊はいるのですが観光なれしているせいか、あまり動きが見られなかったです。

小さなクマ牧場ですが、エサをねだる姿が超可愛いです。様々なおねだりポーズについついエサを追加で買ってしまいます。
