First time we got to see wild salmon running the gauntlet back upriver, where they spawn, mate and die. Nature in all its gut-wrenchingly visceral glory. It's a winding stream that comes in from the Sea of Okhotsk, into pebbly shallows where several seabirds wait for easy pickings, up into the stream under the Onnebetsu bridge, and upstream past several jumps. We drove from Abhashiri to Shiretoko, via Onnebetsu, and parked our car just before the bridge by the side of the road. There is a car parking space along the river in the turn off just after the bridge, where there is a simple viewing area down some stairs, right by the side of the stream. From the bridge you can look down onto the stream out into the Sea, where the seabirds wait at the mouth of the stream. We looked down and saw several silvery bodies holding steady against the current, together with some dead salmon washed to the side of the river, exhausted from the uphill struggle. From the viewing platform further upriver you can see the salmon up close, but they stay on the other side, so it's hard to capture on film - we only spotted them from their swaying motions and sun glinting off their scales. It's a game of patience - we were lucky enough to see two salmon try their luck jumping up a barrier that looked about a metre high. This looked like a man-made barrier with metal rods sticking out at regular intervals, which seemed so cruel - one fish jumped high and smacked right into the rod, falling back into the swirls. The second fish we saw try didn't make it either :(Right next to the viewing platform, we saw an exhausted fish wedged into the concrete corner, the water pushing against it. We used a stick to lever it free in the hopes that it could recover in the slower waters, but I had a feeling, as we watched it bob back down, that it would be one of the unlucky ones. Great respect for salmon after seeing this first hand!

秋であれば、川を渡る橋の上から、帰ってきた鮭をたくさん見ることが出来ます。駐車場もあり車を停めて直ぐです。大海を旅して帰ってきた鮭にお疲れ様を行ってあげましょう。そうしないとイクラ丼を食べた後に化けて出るかも。ガハハ

少し少なめかも、というお話でしたが、たくさんの鮭が遡上しているところを見学できました。必ず生まれた川に戻ってくること、知床の生物多様性の根幹をよく勉強できました。

川と橋の距離がとても近く、鮭遡上がよくみえます。川に下りてみることもできます。たいへんそうだなぁ、と思う先には、鮭釣りの群れが。。。かわいそうだなぁと。。。

丁度次期らしく、サケの遡上を見ることができました。ゆうがただったが、たくさんのサケたちが遡上する姿は圧巻でした。テレビでは見たことがありますが、実物は初めて。とても良い経験になりました。

今回は、さほどの数は見られませんでしたただ、昔、５年くらい前１０月下旬訪れた際は、川がますでいっぱい状態でした今回気づいたのがたぶん観光客が増えすぎたのでしょう河口付近への立ち入り禁止措置と橋の上流部の川に降りる箇所も立ち入り禁止になており、遠目でしか見えません

たくさんのカラフトマスが川を上ってる様子が見れます。川が黒くなるくらいすごい数のカラフトマスが川を上る光景は見ごたえ十分。

サケ・マスの遡上スポットの遠音別川（おんねべつかわ）　ウトロから西進してオシンコシンの滝の先にある橋の付近がスポット。オシンコシンの滝は観光案内標識があるが、ここにはない(見落としたかも）左側に駐車エリアがあるが標識なく分かりずらい。10月1日に寄った時は数台の車の駐車と反対車線に観光バスが路上停車していたので、特別な場所だと分かりました。橋から見下ろすと、カラフトマスが遡上していました。それもびっくりするくらいの数でした。死骸もたくさん確認できました。橋の西側のゲートをくぐると海岸に降りることができ、河口のカラフトマスをまじかに見ることができるので、是非下まで行くことをお勧めします。まさに身体を傷つけながらも産卵している光景や臨終に立ち会うことができ感無量でした。

２年前に訪れた時は国道３３４号線のパーキングエリアから川沿いに少し歩いたところに観賞用のデッキがあったのですが、今年は土砂崩れかなにかで立ち入ることができませんでした。８月１６日でしたので数匹しか見れませんでしたが、２年前は同じ時期に無数の遡上が確認できました。国道を渡り、海岸に出て河口付近でも見ることもできます。訪れた時期によって感想が異なると思いますが、気軽に行けるところですので夏の終わりから秋は是非立ち寄ると良いと思います。

２０１３年８月中旬に、訪問しました。時期的には微妙かなと思いましたが、よーく見るとサケが１０匹ほど確認できました。想像していたよりも、迫力は少なかったですが、知床にいくには通り道なので寄ってみても損はないと思います。
