Tajikistan has rich history, despite not being a popular tourist destination. National museum is a great place to visit in order to understand and know more about Tajikistan's history. They have a pretty interesting collection of artifacts dating back Alexander the Great's time, or even older. Also, they host the biggest statue of Buddha in Central Asia (I'm not sure if it was the original or the replica, though, because when we saw it, it looked quite fresh). The building of the museum is surrounded with a large park, so if you only have a weekend in Dushanbe it'd be a good idea to combine the museum and the park. In the park you can also see the second biggest flag in the world (Qatar has recently taken the first place), and the presidential palace. One remark, they do charge more for the ticket, if they see you have a camera, assuming you're going to take photos. We paid more to be able to take photos, but no one ever checked our tickets, so I guess had we not paid extra fee for taking photos, I'd still be able to capture freely.

In general is very well organized museum with a huge space .i visited with local friend and entrance ticket was five times more expensive for expat (5 Somoni versus 25). Also had to pay additional SOM 10 in order to take picture inside the musem.

Well the museum is big and is also accessible for people with disability. That's great...Specially i liked the hall of gifts and souvenirs honored to Government of Tajikistan by several politician and nations. I also like the artifacts. However nothing much to see...I enjoyed parks of Dushanbe more. The museum could be presented in more lively way. For example, the city is full of beautiful water fountains, they could have used some water techniques to make the museum more interesting, specially in the chambers where they have put dead animal; the real water flowing in there could be more interesting than a painting of a river. The photographs showcased were more disappointing...low resolution. Overall, it was not a big impression for me.

When I travel, I do so to learn about the country I am visiting. This means learning about its historical, cultural and artistic heritage. This museum, although old and not well kept by American or European standards, has everything. You will be quiter surprised when you walk into one room and see a 50 foot long reclining Budda. Really. Go by all means.

I am sure Tajikistan has better places to see. Maybe not in the city center. This is a fake museum. Full of replicas. It is didactic.

4 year old large A/C museum, with good English signage (if you are not fluent in Tajik or Russian). Admission 25 somoni = $5 US, plus $6 for English speaking guide is well worth it. 3 big floors: 1) natural and political history of Tajik lands until 9 th century AD. 2) history and politics from formation of independent Tajik nation in 9 th century thru today.3) artwork and crafts, mostly paintings from Soviet era.All categories well done with good signage.Overall a pleasant surprise in a nation with very little tourism infrastructure.

On a hot day this is a good place to go to learn about the past in this corner of Asia. Don't compare this museum to those in many other capitals or you will be disappointed. Definitely the highlight is the reclining Buddha.

Nice historical site and with view of Tajik Flag in back ground when you are outside museum. Items belong to history of CIS countries and overall good to visit.

Its by the flagpole so easy to find. The exhibits were well lit, in large cool rooms and quite interesting. Some imagination could be used to explain why an object is interesting, what it was used for, why someone cared enough to put it in a museum
