Wonderful place to see some modern art in Dushanbe! A bit difficult to find but certainly worth looking for.

It is a great shame that this place is so difficult to find and sadly lots of local people do not seem to know about it! Some of Tajikistan's most celebrated artists have their studios here and if you can get by in Tajik, Farsi or Russian, a visit and chat with these guys (and one woman) will provide you with more insights into recent Tajik history, culture and society than any other pass time or attraction in Dushanbe.Here you can visit the workshops of established and more famous painters like Murivat Bekhnazarov, young painters with a distinctly modern style such as Bahrom Ismatov and more traditional painters Bakhtiyor Odinaev. There are also two workshops of traditional ornamental carpenters and you may have the opportunity to see wooden tabchans (day beds) and besedki (bandstand type structures to be found in the botanical garden) being made. Here you can also buy artwork directly from the artists, cheaper than you will find it in the galleries of Dushanbe. Be sure to get a certificate that you can present to customs if needed on departure.
