This is the best monument in Hampi, and that's saying something. Its quite a big complex and there are about 5 different structures worth seeing.Your vehicle will go only upto the parking area. From there you have to either walk (10-15 mins) or bicycle or take a battery powered car (INR 10 for one way INR 20 for round trip) to reach the temple complex. You have to buy a ticket (INR 10 for Indians, INR 250 for foreigners). The same ticket is also valid for other ticketed monuments in Hampi. As you enter, you get the ratha (chariot) first. The chariot is constructed fo various rocks using an interlocking system. Immediately ahead of the chariot is the ancient audience cum dancing hall. The hall has some brilliantly sculpted pillars. The base is beautifully sculpted with scenes of daily life - there is one whole row around the structure with scenes of horse markets. To the left of the chariot, there is a hall with sculpted scenes from the life of Lord Vishnu/Krishna - including the Dasavatars, the Ramayana etc. This hall was built after King Krishna Devaraya had defeated the Oriyas in a war, so you can see Oriya influence here. Behind this there is another hall - and here you can experience the famed musical pillars of the temple.

The Vithala temple is one of the main temple complexes along with the Virupaksha Temple complex, however unlike the latter it is in a state of ruins. The main temple complex houses the Stone Chariot which is one of Hampi's most identifiable/symbolic stone structure and the main temple's structure has pillars which are supposed to be produce varying music notes (closed to the public now). There are a lot of other structures around the complex which entails a bit of a walk, but you must see them. One can also walk along the banks of the Tungabhadra around this complex. We also found a friendly Boatsman who took us on a small joy ride in the river.(mind you they have circular boats over here called Coracles which look extremly flimsy). The outer shell of the complex has old structures which were once bustling markets, garrisons and some water tanks as well. Ideally visit early morning or late afternoon as the sun can get real strong during mid-day.

Seeing and being blessed by the elephant was fantastic, following her here from the river bathing. At the weekends there are many colourful morning cermemonies bringing the temple to life.

it is one of the best temple ruins in Hampi. The Chariot is the center of attraction with musical pillars. many people only visit the temple but do not walk to the ruins behind the temple. Sule bazaar and the Achutaraya temple is behind vithala temple.

The stone chariot was awesome. The overall temple was also big and made us wonder about the size of the city given the time when the temple was built since it catered to the city population.
