Although it's just outside of Tilaran Viento Fresco Falls is only a short 60 min drive from Monteverde, I highly recommend the drive to the waterfalls, total worth the effort. This is a family owned property and well maintained by Tico standards, it's only a 700 meter hike to the furthest waterfalls but you can get right next to if not right under most of the waterfalls. All the waterfalls were breathtaking, I was amazed it wasn't crowded considering the small $15 admission fee and the return on investment. It's probably not a trip for the elderly or the unfit, the hike to the waterfalls is all down a series of steep stairs.

I was not only impressed by the natural beauty of Viento Fresco Waterfall, but with the fact that it is owned and run by a family whose members could not have been more friendly and helpful. They helped me arrange transportation to their place; and once there, my guide offered to carry my backpack so that I could enjoy my hike unencumbered! Very considerate. For a really relaxing time, I recommend hiking down to the falls and then returning by horseback...on a clear day you will have a view all the way to the Pacific.

This is a series of 4 falls: three are a part of one stream; the other joins at the bottom. The first two falls (Serena and the Hidden Falls) are suitable for access by families with smaller children; the third (Rainbow) is the most impressive but requires a little more stamina; and the final falls (Slide Falls) demand a degree of physical prowess. Not on the way down (although the steps can be uneven and sometimes slippery), but on the way back up. Didn't measure it, but we think that you probably walk down around 500m / 1500 ft to bottom of the Slide Falls, and you have to get back up (memories of "Daddy, please will you carry me?" caused alarm bells). We didn't stop to swim at the foot of the falls, but there are changing rooms and picnic tables if you want to do more than simply exercise your thighs! Our middle-aged down-and-up experience took around an hour and a half. The cost was $15 per adult from the ticket office / cafe on the main road- good value.

There was steady mist the day we visited so we opted for the self walk tour ($15/per person). Lucky for us, they gave us rain ponchos which made the trek much more pleasant given the weather. The waterfalls were beautiful and well worth all of the knee beds down and up the stairs. I would caution that one should be careful on the steps when they are wet/damp as some can be a bit slippery - not a fall you'd want to take. (They did a great job creating the cement steps as most also have rock/gravel added to the face of them which provided great traction, but some were topped with leaves, mossy, or didn't have the extra rock added.) Also, if you have any knee injury or shortness of breath, the many steep steps may be a challenge.
