Since 1897, this elegant theater has been a source of pride.

After beautiful rivers and deep jungles, what a surprise to find this treasure. Magnificent theater built in 1897, I believe, and decorated in several European styles. Paintings on the ceilings are magnificent even though the artist was never in Costa Rica. The painting over the grand stairway has several mistakes but serves its purpose in attempting to show Costa Rican life of the day. The upstairs "lobby" is elegant with furnishings in French tradition. The theater itself has original wrought iron seating which can be moved when the floor is hoisted up to make a ballroom. Amazing engineering. Well worth a visit. The gold leaf alone is worth the time. Children may not be interested.

We arrived at opening on a Monday - we were first to arrive. We purchased two tickets costing a total of $20. We asked for an English guide. José was our guide and he was excellent. He shared many stories about the theatre and had some interesting photos to share on his iPad. At the conclusion of his tour, we were invited to spend as much time as we wanted to view the theatre and take photos (NO FLASH permitted). Such a lovely theatre. We did want to show our appreciation to José with a small tip, but the tour guides are not permitted to accept gratuity.

The theatre is one of the most spectacular buildings in San Jose. It is worth a visit. It is in the style of a European theatre and built on the wealth of sisal. Our children did not think it was very exciting so you may not wish to bring them.

This tour was very informative, beautiful building, I felt like I was in Europe waiting to see the opera. Very decorative. I loved seeing this and learning the history behind this building. A treasure in the middle of the city.

Disappointed that we were able to see only outside and lobby. Nicely decorated. Small gift shop with variety of items for sale.
