We went to the cave by taxi, as we were told that a tuc tuc would be unlikely to wait while we explored the cave. The taxi driver was happy to wait for us, and the cost was very reasonable from our hotel in Flores and back.. The cave is very unpretentious, especially the ticket area near the entrance, but hey, it's unspoilt and undeveloped. We brought our own torches, and our guide had a big powerful torch, which was great for illuminating all the limestone formations. The guide pointed out all the formations in a relaxed and unhurried manner, so there was no problem stopping to take photos. Once inside the cave it's a fairly easy, mostly flat walk, but let common sense prevail and watch your footing in some parts. There is one part you can crawl through on hands and knees, bit I didn't do that part due to the bulky camera bag I was carrying. Otherwise there's full headroom all through. As well as the stalactites on the ceiling, you may well see some little bats.Bring your own torch - although I believe you can hire them at the entrance. Wear ordinary walking footware, but I would not recommend sandals or thongs. The entrance fee, and the guide's fee, are minimal, and make a good value expedition.

I was there this week with a friend. Some actual information:- entrance is Q 25 for foreigners, Q15 for Guatemalans- Bring your own torch or rent one for Q 10- Mototaxis from Flores cost Q 15 per tour- There is the possibility to cross the whole hill! This seems really interesting. You would get quite dirty, as you have to go on your knees and even stomach sometimes. The guide costs Q 100, + entrance per person + headlamps rent for Q 10. you would have to announce 1 day in advance! If not, no one can accompany you through. We spent around 1 hour in the cave, there is no electric light anymore although you can still see some cables. I am happy I didn't go there alone, it would have been really spooky. There are some interesting formations. The best thing was to be there, without any other touristst.

If you stay in Flores or close by and have some time to stroll around, consider exploring this great cave-system!It's definitely worth a visit and it's really close to St. Elena. Just take any tuktuk and ask for the grutas and they'll drop you for less than 2usd. It takes some 20 minutes walking if you want to save the money.Once you're there, you only need a torch and to pay another 2usd each as entry-fee. There used to be lights inside, but they are no longer working. Even better, so you really feel the darkness of the cave. Inside there are tons of beautiful stalactites to discover and lots of places to explore. We spent there 2 hours fascinated by the beautiful stone-formations and for us it was even more rewarding than the very well known caves of Lanquin in another part of Guatemala. We really loved it and would recomend it highly.(And if they're telling you in some tourist-agencys that the caves are closed, don't believe it, they just want to sell you a tour they're making money with...)
