Peter and Paul Fortress is interesting if you are in St Petersburg for more than 3 days, otherwise I'd probably skip it and just take a photo across the river. We visited in February 2013 and it was interesting to see the locals ice fishing out the front, with their bottles of vodka standing in the ice. There was also an ice-carving display while we were there, which included a castle big enough for the kids to play on.The fortress seemed like a popular weekend destination for locals as well as tourists, but even though it was crowded, it was more like a day out at the markets rather than a jam-packed museum. It's an easy walk across and we got to watch the police hovercraft racing up the frozen river on the way.

So much to see here - the church is where the Romanov family is interred and it's beautiful. The prison is very interesting with information (in English) about its previous inmates - still retains a gloomy atmosphere.

Many Russian royal families are buried in the Cathedral. Our private guide educated us about the history of the fortress, which is very interesting. We also heard an amazing a cappella singing group.

A historical landmark and a nice place to visit in St. Petersburg. The Cathedral is impressive and there's also the burial place of many Russian Tsars and the Romanov family. While you're there, don't forget to check out the statue of Peter the Great with its disproportionately small head.

Very interesting to see whilst in St Peterburg. Easy walk from Hermitage area across the bridges. 300rb per adult for a combined ticket gains access to the Cathedral and prison. Both worth a visit. A few other museums in the complex but asking further fees of 200+rb, even wanted 250rb to walk up along the walls. A bit of a shame this wasn't all included as it does add up. Still worth a visit to see the cathedral and some good Romanov history and good views of city from that side of Neva river.

Although I walked to the Fortress along the embankment I doubt I would do it a second time. There are so many lovely neighborhoods where you could make better use of your walking time. Inside the fortress there are many interesting things to see, through it is a little off-putting that you pay at each site besides the entry fee. There is an easy to miss miniature museum, however, it is absolutely worth a visit. This artist's miniatures are so tiny the "scenes" are viewed through magnification. Walking around the grounds is pleasant, and in mid-sept. not too crowded. Being in the Cathedral, the final resting place of various Tsars and their families, or in the haunting Kresty Prison, is like breathing history.

Great experience. If you are up to the challenge, go walking from the winter Palace via the bridge on the right (looking from the Winter Palace across the river to the Fortress). As you enter the fortress, you will find yourself almost in medieval times. The entrance way has a fun rabbit where locals throw coins and make a wish. Make sure to make it to the embattlement by noon to see the cannon go off.
