This Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) is in Sanya, not Haikou. Currently the 4th tallest statue in the world and THE tallest statue of Guanyin in the world, it is an imposing yet calming sight. Guanyin seems to be gliding on the waves as she heads inland. An arresting sight to behold. It brings a sense of peace as I contemplate my own devotions and my own faith.Located within the Sanya Nanshan Buddhism Cultural Zone, this 108m or 354 ft high statue have 3 facades. It is actually a trinity if viewed from 3 angles. To see the 3 images one must circle the entire statue.The front present Guanyin holding a sutra, symbolising 'wisdom'. The right image shows Guanyin holding a string of prayer beads, symbolising 'compassion'. The left view shows Guanyin holding a lotus flower, symbolising 'peace;.If the Statue of Liberty embodies the western ideal of Liberty, Peace and Equality, this trinity represents the orient's treasured values of Compassion, Wisdom and Peace.For those who do not relish the long walk from the park's entrance to the coastal statue, there are train rides to ease the journey.It is said that the 2,600 ton statue can resist a force 14 typhon.
